Really hairy.

So...
I'm really hairy. My pubic hair descends multiple inches down my thighs, I have a relatively pronounced "happy trail" and I even have a few hairs around my nipples. I just let it be for the most part if I know I'm not going to be intimate with someone purely because of the hassle that goes with getting rid of it. Not only is it time consuming, but the ugly red bumps and ingrowns (even on my stomach!) are often more disturbing than the actual hair. I feel like it actually puts a damper on my relationships because I'm so self conscious of it. I won't hook up with anyone unless everything's newly shaven because of the risk of the aforementioned bumps, stubble, grossness, etc. I've also noticed that there are actually multiple hairs growing out of the same follicle, attributing to the stubbornness of the hair. I've tried waxing/shaving/bleaching but nothing really seems to help.
Thus, I ask two questions. 1) Is this normal? I come from a family of pretty hairy people but I've heard about hormone imbalances and have never gotten myself checked out.
2) What do I do about this? I know there are threads about successful removal of pubic hair, but I feel like most of these people have rather fine hair that can be easily shaven or waxed.
