Hi everyone!  I thought I'd tell you the story of my hymenectomy so that it may help others!

For years, I heard horror stories about the hymenectomy I knew I needed.  I heard that I would need to lay on a table upside down.  My GYN said that I might need to use dilators and that idea scared me.  I feared bleeding more heavily when I had my period, just because the menstrual blood would have more 'room' to come out.

In short, I put it off, for years, because it scared me.  Who wants to undergo general anesthesia, right?  When I did have it, only my partner and my best friend knew, not my parents (I'm in my 30's, but still), not my other close friends.  I had surgery, and no one knew, because I was embarrassed about it.  I felt like I was way too old to be dealing with this, that it would have been much less embarrassing if I had done it at 18 or something.  For years, I used only maxi pads, and didn't have penetrative sex.  I am a lesbian, but my sexual options were still limited.  For years, I couldn't swim when I had my period, etc.  I was somewhat sexually active, but couldn't have a pap smear, and that got more and more embarrassing to explain.  Nurses would say 'undress for your pap' and I knew I couldn't get a pap.  My hymen had an opening that was small enough for menstrual blood to get out, but not much bigger.  I think my GYN got a Q-tip through the hole once, and it hurt.  Obviously, no tampon or penis would have fit!

I had the surgery over a year ago, and wish that I had done it sooner!  It was a complete success!

I was in the hospital for only a few hours, and unconscious very briefly.  When they woke me up after the surgery, I couldn't believe it was over.  I had minor bleeding afterwards, but less than a menstrual period.  I was given a gel to numb the area afterwards, which I used for less than a week, and a strong oral pain reliever, which I never took!  I was to use a wash bottle given to me at the hospital to spray the area with warm water after every time I peed, to clean it.  The hard part about this is that I didn't want to be carrying a wash bottle into the bathroom with me in public bathrooms.  I avoided wearing any tight pants for a week or two.  It was summer and I'm a teacher, so I pretty much wore athletic shorts.  I don't know that I had to do this.  I was a little sore down there, and this kept me more comfortable.

The stitches disintegrated on their own.  I didn't need to use a dilator, or to have anything more done, besides a check up to make sure it looked ok.

I had a pap smear within a month afterwards.  I started wearing tampons within a month, without problem (besides the initial adjustment period), and have used them exclusively ever since.  I love them (just as much as anyone can love tampons, anyways)!  I can't believe I didn't do this sooner!  I can now have penetrative sex, and I now feel 'normal' down there.  Before, I felt broken, because my hymen was so thick and imperforate that surgery was the only cure.  'Who needs surgery to have sex?' I thought.  Well, I did, and I wish I had done it sooner!  I can now stick my fingers in there and feel around, allowing me to feel like I know my own body.  I really felt like I didn't know a vagina felt before because I didn't have two obvious holes, ya know?

First, the curious question: Where can I find good descriptions, in words or pictures, of the normal variance of mucous? I've been to that one famed and informative page where a woman takes a photo of her cervix every day of her cycle for a month, but my goop isn't like her goop at all. I understand there's gonna be variance, but I've never heard anyone describe what I get.

Basically, for either none or up to six days in the middle of my cycle, I eject up to a third a cup of gunk a day. By "gunk," I don't mean the clear, slippy type of secretion, and I don't mean the mildly stretchy, egg white kind. I mean it's like half-dried rubber cement, and it stretches from my vagina to the surface of the water whenever I pee in a column as thick as a Sharpie marker. (I think the longest I've ever stretched it is one and a half feet, and at that length it was a little thinner than a cheap mechanical pencil) It's almost clear nearly all the time, but sometimes it's lightly amber. When it dries, it's a rich, clear amber. Doesn't hurt, but it's annoying. Very rarely, for a day right before or after the gunky phase, it'll be the consistency of wet boogers, and be white and opaque. Does anyone else get this amount of gunk for this long?

Second, I'm still getting painful bubbles of air inside of me. They come and go, sometimes I'll be fine for a day or two, other times they'll always be there as a presence and sometimes there as a lightly stinging pain- they've gone down in pain significantly since I last posted, though. Now they're just cringe-worthy to a little annoying, before I couldn't bring myself to shift my leg when they were bad. The whole lower vulva is still intermittently tender and painful upon pressure, too, but starting around the urethra on up, I'm fine. It's just around the vagina and the lower half of the inner lips that hurts. Hope this fades away soon.

Also, since a week and a half ago, sometimes I feel like the weight of my inner guts is all resting in my vagina and if I were to stomp up and down I'd prolapse. When I'm experiencing it, the jar from every step I take makes it feel like there's a lead ball inside my vagina about to fall out, and I'm clenching onto it while it bounces. I know this sounds ridiculous, but it's a weird, weird feeling, and I don't know what's causing it. Should I do clenching exercises, could this be the result of weakened/damaged muscles from stretching the tunnel out for the hymenectomy?

The title is a pretty good summary, haha. Hi, I haven't been here before two days ago, but I've been, um, having crotch problems for a while. It's kinda long, so I cut it.

Well I have not posted on here in forever due to a livejournal hiatus (weird how that sometimes happens right?) I hadn't had a lot to update on for a while but now I think I am ready for the conclusion of my whole hymenectomy ordeal. Here are two of my previous posts, not sure if there were any more I remember there being a 3rd but it wasn't tagged.

Okay, well I am keeping this posted to document my surgery for my own personal records, and maybe perhaps to help someone else who has the same problem as I do because I know it was hard for me to find others to talk to or hear their experiences. I will try to be as thorough as I can!

Hi everyone! Although I've never posted in here before, this community has helped me out a lot with questions I've had in the past, so I thought I would share my experiences!

I got a hymenectomy last Thursday (6/14). For a small look into my recovery and what's up down there almost a week later, follow the cut. )

I do have a question for ladies who have had one, though - did you have to dilate yourself further after the procedure to have sex comfortably, or were you good to go right afterwards? I've talked to a few people around town, but have had mixed answers. I heard several times that it's just based on how much the doctor cut and if you have scar tissue formed or not - no other factors are involved. Is there truth to this?

Thanks!

Hey Ladies! I posted a while back concerning various hymen adjustment surgeries and have just this morning had my hymenectomy and figured I'd add to the database of knowledge that is VP.

A hymenectomy is total or near-total removal of the hymenal membrane to allow for easier access. All my life I've had a problem using tampons and have never been able to have sex or a pelvic exam because my vaginal entrance was too small. It also turns out, I was informed today, that I had what is known as a septate hymen, where a band of tissue is stretched across the opening creating two smaller holes. The problems were all fixed in a short procedure, during which I was under anesthesia so I don't remember any of it. The doctor cut off the excess membrane with a heated needle (or something like that) so the wound was mostly cauterized during the procedure. She put in a few dissolving stitches and I was moved to the recovery room.

After an hour or so when I was pretty much conscious, they wheeled me out and I was on my way back home. My cooch was understandably sore and stings when I urinate, but that should clear up in a few days as it heals. Funnily enough, the thing that's bothering me the most is the sore throat I have from something they put in my throat to help me breathe.

Anyway, that's my story. I'd like to thank everyone who responded to my previous questions, as all advice was taken into consideration. If you have a similar problem or have any questions for me, feel free to ask.

Oh, I almost forgot to add the best part. Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the renowned sex therapist and author, did a lecture at my university this evening and she was absolutely delightful. I was able to go to a reception with her afterwards and eat a little dessert with her. I was too embarrassed to bring up my recent surgery, but it would've been interesting to hear what she had to say.
