Hello, VPers!

As you may or may not know, [livejournal.com profile] vaginapagina was founded on September 19, 2001. That means that VP is about to turn ten! To celebrate, we're having a VP-icon-making contest, and we're inviting you to create and submit VP-themed icons for your fellow members to vote on.

The rules are pretty simple.

Icons submitted must:

- be standard LJ-icon size (100x100 pixels).
- not violate any copyright laws (i.e. contain only images that you have the right to use). Users are welcome and encouraged to incorporate Madge (the figure in our current icon and in maintainer icons) in their designs.
- be in keeping with VP's policies.
- be sent to vpteam@vaginapagina.com, by September 14, 2011, along with their creator's LJ username. There is a maximum limit of three submissions per entrant, just to keep the final poll from getting all out of control.

Submissions will be put to a vote in the community starting on September 16th, and the winner will be announced on VP's tenth birthday. As always, if you have any questions, just let us know.

We're excited to see your creations! Also, please stay tuned for forthcoming announcements about the fabulous prizes we have for winners/entrants. :)

Cheers,

Jocey

A recent VP conversation got me thinking about how common it is to have one (or some or many) menstrual blood mishaps that necessitated the urgent use of a bathroom. I'd always assumed it was a common occurrence, as it's still a monthly occurrence for me. But I also know that my experience with menstrual blood is way the fuck out at the far end of the bell curve.

So, in the interests of anecdotal pseudo-science, I bring you... TICKY BOXES!

[Poll #1534770]

(Quick disclaimer: This is not an official VP poll. However, I have checked with the other maintainers to get approval before posting.)

If you have any additional information you'd like to share, you're welcome and encouraged to do so in the comments. For example, if certain factors -- starting/discontinuing hormonal contraceptives, changing menstrual products, pregnancy, perimenopause, etc. -- have affected the frequency of your bloodmergencies, that's a good thing to know.

Also, if you have any extra fun blood stories (or regular fun blood stories -- I'm easily amused today!), feel free to discuss those in the comments as well. For example, if you have ever accidentally squirted blood into your eye while inserting your menstrual cup (GUESS WHAT I DID THIS MORNING), you will have found good company here. :P

Hi, all. First off, thanks for digging up some of your favorite VP entries and posting them here, so we know what folks would like to submit to LJ's upcoming 10th anniversary anthology.

The poll below contains a list of all eligible (according to the stipulations LiveJournal gave us) nominated entries. Please help us select our "Top 5" by voting for up to 5 of the selections below. Yeah, you're kind of on the honor system to limit it to 5 choices. But it's not the end of the world if you live in the same "counting is hard, yo" world that I do. ;)

And just as a bit of clarification, since we (like many of you) love the Everyday Bodies Project: We've decided to take those entries out of the running because we're concerned that sharing them outside of VP would violate the privacy agreement we have with the people whose photos are displayed there.

Thanks for your input in helping spread the vulva love far and wide!

EDIT: Here's the correct link to The skinny on the word skinny. Looks like I was not so careful in my copying and pasting last night. :P

If you need to alter some of your answers because of this, you cal click on the poll and then click "Fill Out Poll," and it should let you retake the poll. Sorry for any inconvenience!

EDIT 2: The poll is now closed. These are the results we'll be using to send our submissions to LJ. :)

Hi all!

We know one very common question that comes up in VP is when HBC users can expect their periods to show up during their hormone-free weeks. While it's totally normal for a withdrawal bleed to arrive at any time during the hormone-free week, knowing "it's all normal" doesn't necessarily give folks any idea of how common it is for bleeding to start sooner or later during that time. That can be a tad inconvenient even for people who aren't particularly worried about pregnancy -- and downright nerve-wracking for some people who are.

This is where this poll comes in. While it shouldn't be confused with actual large-scale and controlled research, our hope is that this can provide folks who are concerned -- or even just curious -- with some representation of how common it is for what to happen when.

The poll applies to people who use now or have used types of hormonal birth control that have a "set" time for a withdrawal bleed. This would mean combined oral contraceptives, contraceptive patches, and the Nuva Ring. It wouldn't include progestin-only pills, injectables (like Depo Provera), implants (like Implanon), or intrauterine systems (like Mirena) since these don't have a non-active time during which the body is "supposed" to bleed and therefore don't regulate bleeding in quite the same way.

When filling out this poll, please use when it is or was most common for you to start your period-like bleeding while taking hormonal birth control. If you feel like you need to click a couple of boxes to account for your normal variation, feel free to do that. And if there really is no "most common" bleed time for you, let us know that too.

[Poll #1252831]

And as always, if you feel like you need to explain something or provide additional information in the comments -- by all means, share!

I'm in the middle of a VP research project of sorts, and I'm wondering if anyone here -- especially people with extensive HBC kowledge and/or people located outside of the US -- could give me some prelimiary answers. Right now, I'm looking for info about the availablity of non-pill hormonal contraception outside of the United States. (I already have some information with respect to Canada and the UK, but I'm still missing bits and pieces.)

  1. Is the birth control patch (Ortho Evra in the US) available elsewhere in the world? Where? If so, does it still use the brand name Ortho Evra, or does it use a different name?
  2. What about Depo Provera (the shot)? Where outside the US is it available? Does it have another name if it's used elsewhere?
  3. In what non-US countries can one obtain the Nuva Ring (or its equivalent if it has a different name)? Specific countries? Brand names?
  4. Besides the Mirena, are any there other hormone-releasing IUDs currently available? If so, in which locations? What are those IUDs called?
Any answers you can give or sources to which you can direct me are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all, one of our members, [livejournal.com profile] vixxette, is writing an essay on gender roles in lesbian pornography and she asked us to post a poll to help her out. She asks that only lesbians participate in the poll, as that is the test study that she would like for her essay. Thanks for your help!!

[Edit: The point of the paper is to write about the sex roles that self-identified lesbians take on during sex. If you sometimes identify as a lesbian then please feel free to answer. The reasoning for using the term lesbian is that a lot of girls/women tend to identify as bisexual when they are not quite sure of their sexual identity. I wanted to use the term lesbian to weed out those women because a lot of bisexuals will tend to take on the submissive or "female" role during sex. The dominate or "male" role is going to be less prevalent in women who sleep with both men and women from the reasearch I have done. I use the word female in quotations because I personally do not feel that the submissive role is particularly female, which is the basis of my paper. I hope this makes a little more sense and I do hope it didn't further frustrate anyone.]

We get a lot of questions about birth control around here, so the VP Team decided to come up with a poll that could serve as a directory/tool/resource for our members. The idea is that you should be able to come back at any time to check the poll results, giving you instant access to lots of member feedback about all kinds of birth control methods.

If you are currently using some form of birth control/contraceptive, please participate! As poll participants increase, so will the usefulness of the resource! Thanks in advance from all of us at the VP Team.

Not about our vaginas per se, but vaginas are a sort of receptacle for the condom, after a fashion. I'm interested in condom use as it pertains to this community (and beyond, if anyone wants to forward the link on) so I've created a Zoomerang survey on the subject.

The survey is completely anonymous - it does not ask for your name, e-mail address, or report your IP address. I'd like for anyone who is or has ever been sexually active to take the survey. I can post the results here in a week or two, if anyone's interested in them.
