I'm thinking about getting an IUD like the copper T, but I love my Instead softcups. I've heard that IUDs have strings that come out of the cervix that you have to check. Can these get pulled by menstrual cups? Does anyone know if it's ok to have an IUD and continue to use mentrual cups like the Instead soft cup? Thanks!

Does anyone have any experience with these reusable baby-sock tampons?  I found the link in the memories, but I wasn't sure if anyone had tried it:

http://www.borntolove.com/frugal-column1.html

Also, I just found out about these Beppy Action tampons - they're like sea sponge tampons, only synthetic, and they're single-use.  You can use them during intercourse (I'm weaning myself off of Insteads because I'm getting an IUD soon).  They're a similar concept to those Gynotex tampons, but those aren't available in the US.  Has anyone seen these in the US, or know of a company that ships them to the US?:

One last question:  What sort of detergent do you ladies use to wash cloth pads?  I know it's best to use a gentle detergent that's hypoallergenic.  Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

as well you can find many of these products at a local natural foods store/co-op such as Whole Foods(which is a larger chain) or small local one (I buy them at a small one call Nature Mart in Los Angeles which btw has Diva Cup size 1 on sale for 19.99 iif you are in the Hollywood/Los Feliz area)

Hello there. I hope this isn't redundant; I've done a quick search but couldn't see anything similar being asked. I'm wondering where I'd be able to find natural sea sponges - to be used during my period - in the UK. I know it might seem a fairly obvious quesion but I've checked all the usual suspects (Holland & Barret, Superdrug, Boots, a few supermarkets) and all I can find are baby sponges which are synthetic and often dyed, ie. not something I'd be looking forward to introducing to my body! Is there even anything online that's based in the UK? I know a lot of you girls won't be from the UK but if anyone is and has a suggestion I'd be ever so grateful :)

(I posted this in [livejournal.com profile] menstrual_cups but I'm posting here too because I'm hoping this helps to convert you all to the best menstual product, ever)

So yesterday started the first day of my first full cycle with the Divacup. When I received my Diva last month, it only came in time for the last day of my period, so while I got some good experience with a light flow (insertion and removal came easily to me), I didn't really get it for the whole cycle. I've been now keeping a little journal of my menstrual cycles (how much I'm bleeding, and since I have a cup, I can acurrately measure how much I'm bleeding down to the mL), and generally anything regarding my womanly parts (aka infections and etc). I think it's good to know how frequent (if at all), I'm getting infections.

Anyways, since I usually start my periods on a Tuesday (Sunday being the first day without my HBC) I put my Diva in that morning at around 9:30am before heading to class. I ended up taking it out twice during school, because the stem was bothering me (I haven't cut it yet). The second time I actually went to the least populated bathroom on campus so that I could go out of the stall and wash my Divacup, since the first time I checked it I didn't wash it...just cleaned it off with toilet paper and it felt dirty (I'm just not ready to wash it in front of people). Well, by the time I was ready for bed, I bled only a three of four drops total, but it was awesome to be able to put it in before my period started, so there would be no unexpected leaks. Since I hardly ever use pads, I almost always ruin my underwear. It was also amazing to not have to carry around a bunch of lousy products that make my life miserable anyways.

This morning, I woke up to NO leaks, and a quarter filled cup. I was so excited. No leaks, no messy pads, no ruined sheets, and no having to set an alarm in the middle of the night to get up and change my tampon. I feel so liberated and free. Plus, I finally got the insertion down, so that the stem no longer bothers me. I was going to cut it, but I decided to wait a little bit longer.

This may just be the most valuable purchase I have ever made. You couldn't pay to EVER go back to tampons and pads. I'm currently trying to convert my entire friends list, lol.

So I've sampled 3 varieties of cloth pads over the last 3 months and I've several observations.

Products:
Luna Pads were the ones most widely recommended and were my least favorite.  While the concept that you can change the pad without having to change the holder is wonderful, I found the regular ones incredibly bulky.  They are very absorbent, as a result of the pad, and the doubly thick holder.  They were reminiscent of the old days when commercial maxis were an inch thick and felt like i was wearing a mattress.  And even though they were cloth, I could still hear them rustling when I walked.   They also chafed me, I think because everything was so crowded.

Glad Rags worked really well.  I got a few of their regular pads mostly because they are locally available.  I could get them and try them immediately.  I liked these much better, but they are very $$ compared to others, so I decided to still shop around some.  These averaged $10.99 apiece.  They don't feel like I'm wearing anything at all and worked wonderfully.

Pandora Pads are the bomb.  The regular ones are not too thick and were very comfortable.  It didn't feel like I was wearing anything, and they can be bought in sets of 4, making them a tad cheaper than Glad Rags, with the same basic construction.  These have a terry cloth and flannel lined insert.  They only come with one each but that has been plenty.   These are the ones I am going with for the long haul and will use Glad Rags to supplement them when necessary.

I looked at others but either did not like the design (right angles) or they were not available in any timely fashion (some are made to order and take a long time).

Overall:

  • I bleed less on cloth pads.  Everyone said it; I was dubious.  But I swear my period each time has suddenly lasted not quite 3 days.  Generally mine is about 5+ days.

  • Cloth pads are immensely more comfortable than synthetic ones.

  • Washing them out is easy and my houseplants are elated.

Update: I slept on it (literally, I suppose) and tried again the next day. It was difficult, but I did manage to remove the cup. Huzzah! I think I just need more practice.. or I need to stop doing kegals, because I can barely fit two fingers inside if I try. Thank you so much for all your suggestions! They made me giggle and calm down.

Hey there...

I just purchased a "B" Keeper Cup today. I inserted it without much hassle, but now, trying to remove it...I can't. I just spent the last fifteen minutes digging around up there so long, my vagina is very irritated and in pain now. I'm getting a bit freaked out that I can't remove this thing no matter how hard I try.

It hasn't been in too long (only about an hour or so--I was practicing using it), so it's not exactly imperative it comes off now... but I'm actually a little teary now because it's scaring me. When I try to grab the stem, my fingers just slip off, and when I try to grip the base of the cup, same thing. It's.. suck. I can't relieve the suction pressure at all.

Help, please, has anyone had this problem before?? I don't want to go to the hospital over something t stupid...

i've heard all this stuff about the keeper. has anyone ever tried instead? if i'm not mistaken its just like a keeper but no stem. can anyone tell me more about it? the mechanics and stuff?

I have been thinking of making the gradual move to using a more environmentally friendly menstrual product but I have some hesitation with a few.

I was thinking about using the pads that you can use over, wash, etc. but I live in the dorms most of the year with a roommate and since I have a very, very, VERY busy schedule (20+ hours of work + 20 credit hours + club meetings, scholars, etc.) I will never get around to cleaning them out until the end of the week.

I also gave the Diva a thought. Now don't get all Diva-praising on me, I know it is a great product, but not for everyone. I have reservations about ANYTHING inside me. I can't even use tampons. I don't particularly care for sex (but that could be because I can't orgasm from anything either heh). None of it feels very natural. I walk funny with tampons in me and I constantly have to check and pull them out and put a new one in out of paranoia. And as much as I love my body, I have a huge fear of germs, so I don't care much for touching myself even in a bathroom setting.

Any suggestions? Anything that should make me reconsider those two options? Or should I stick with conventional disposable pads, etc?

so i got my DivaCup last night and tried to use it this morning. and the damn thing nearly ripped me up! it was so weird. i'm not a virgin but for some reason i couldn't get it inside of me and the cup popped back open before it was all the way in and whatever might have been left of my hymen is ruined. i tried a couple of times and it hurt too much so i gave up for the time being. i don't know how to get the stupid thing in and it hurts. i was so excited to use it. and then it hurt my vag!

does anyone have any ideas as to how i can get the stupid thing in??

i also bought sea sponges and those things are way bigger than i thought...
