Shaving/Plucking and ingrown hairs

I'm incredibly frustrated with my ladybits right now. I'm 24 and I've been shaving my pubic hair since I was 16. I used to shave everyday but now I've slacked off to about once or twice a week. In all that time I'd never ever had problems with ingrown hairs... until recently. It's just in the last few months that I've been experiencing monstrously bad ingrown hairs. They're gigantic and swollen and angry and not so attractive. They're pretty much confined to the few random patches where I've taken to plucking over the last few months. Plucking increases the chances of getting ingrown hairs, doesn't it? Should I cease and desist immediately and throw my freakin' tweezer out? Any good methods for getting rid of ingrown hairs that won't result in giant patches of scabbiness?
