[identity profile] li-ber-ate.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] vaginapagina

Wow. So last night I went to a party and got ridiculously drunk, and slept with someone. It was my first time, and no, I don't regret it. I don't really look at sex as that big of a deal, but I do have a question about it. The guy was very nice, and I made sure he wore a condom. So we get started, and then I lost track of time, but I check, and the condom is gone. So I tell him, and then he puts another one on. What I'm most worried about is whether or not I'm likely to get pregnant. Neither of us came, perhaps because we were both too drunk, or it just wasn't happening since I was a virgin, so I know there was no actual semen inside of me. I do know that you can still get pregnant from the secretions or whatever and I also am worried that perhaps I was too drunk to notice if he did, in fact, ejaculate.

I just got off period about two days ago and am worried what the likelihood of me getting pregnant is?

sorry for this post being kind of here and there and not well thought out, but I'm still a little wobbly. I just wanted to know about this so I can be sure, or if I should do something.

well.
thank you!

You can get pregnant at any time in your cycle. However, ovulation usually occurs about 14 days after the first day of your period. Keep in mind that everyone is different though! If you want, you can always take plan B.

Like I said before, you can get pregnant any time in your cycle, but most likely, it would be after your period.

Well, you can't physically get pregnant at any time in your cycle, only around ovulation. However, if you are not charting your fertility signs to know when ovulation occurred, there isn't a way to know for sure if you had sex during a safe or risky time. Ovulation pretty consistently occurs about 2 weeks before your next period (give or take a few days depending on the individual woman), so the time it occurs after your previous period really depends on the length of the current cycle, which may or may not reflect the lengths of past cycles.

That he didn't ejaculate inside you lowers your risk, but if you're not sure of that fact and want to ease your mind, Plan B may be a good option (but you should get it as fast as possible to be most effective).

Pregancy test time, in my opinion. Good luck.

You can take one whenever, I thought. I've got pregnancy testerated many a time (because I am paranoid about babies) sometimes about a day after having a worry, and it's all been negative and I'm not popping any sprogs.

Stick tests won't pick up pregnancy the day after having sex. It takes time for the hormones to build up in your body.

Oh! Goodness. Well, fortune has it that I had another small fear a couple of months afterwards, and that came out clear, too. :/

Yeah, they usually say that a test won't be reliable until you've missed your next period. Even then, if the unprotected...ness had been fairly soon before my period was due, I'd want to take another one a couple of weeks later.

Generally about 14 days after sex is the absolute earliest. However each women is a little diff and it can take diff amounts of time. Wait until you are due for your next period and if you are late test.

Get plan b if you can, and get tested for STIs (just in case).

In the US, you can buy it at any pharmacy that stocks it without a prescription, as long as you're 18 or over (or can find someone over 18 to buy it for you).

Whys is that? Here, to the best of my knowledge, we just have to rock up to family planning and say "Please."

From: [identity profile] jennifer0246.livejournal.com
sure, you can go to family planning, or a clinic, or wherever. but those places typically have less hours than a pharmacy or drug store, so to be able to go into a drug store at 8pm on a friday is generally easier and faster. EC is time-sensitive, the sooner the better.

Date: 2007-05-05 05:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] asunlitrose.livejournal.com
Yes. As long as you're 18 you don't need a prescription, you just have to show your ID and ask for it. Not all places carry it, but I do know that Kroger has vowed that all of their stores will have it, if you have a Kroger by you. You can take Plan B up to 120 hours after sex, but the sooner you take it the more effective it will be.

You can START taking pregnancy tests TWO WEEKS after sex; it's likely if you were pregnant it's show up at the two-week mark or a bit later.

I highly, highly doubt that you're pregnant b/c your period just ended, but if you have short cycles (or even if this cycle happens to be a fluke short cycle) it IS possible to get pregnant on or just after your period. For _most_ women ovulation happens about 2 weeks after their period started.

I'd take emergency contraception if I were you, just in case he came & you didn't notice. If you had been sober and knew for SURE that he didn't come, the risk of pregnancy is so low that I personally wouldnt' take EC, but that's just me.

Date: 2007-05-05 04:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mintblue.livejournal.com
If you had sex last night, then I believe you are still within the window for emergency contraception to be effective. If you're ok with using it, can you get a hold of it somehow? That would certainly ease the pregnancy worries, I think.

Actually, I know. I had a similar situation when I was at uni. Good luck!

It depends on your location... Generally you need a prescription for it www.getthepill.com is a good place if you don't have any other options. You can always call walgreens and ask if they have it over the counter, I'm not sure of the status on all the OTC laws for it.

EC is now over-the-counter in the US for those over 18.

Date: 2007-05-05 04:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] magenter.livejournal.com
It might differ from state-to-state (assuming you're here in the US), but I got it at Walgreen's, though it cost around 40 bucks. It'd probably be less at Planned Parenthood.

I've taken it twice in my life, and it does tend to make me not feel so well for the next day or so, but it's WAY better than the alternative, IMHO.

Hee... yep, uni as in university. I'm an Aussie. :) As such, I might not be able to help you out with some of your questions, sorry. :S Give me a few months and I'll be in the States learning more.

I believe in some states you can get it over the counter after consulting with the pharmacist. If it's the same EC as I took, you'll take two pills twelve hours apart. They can make you feel a little bit queasy, although in my case I'm not sure if it was the pills or just me being worried. There's a swag of info on the FAQ section (http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=Emergency_Contraception_FAQ) of VP if you want to check it out. :)

Oooh thank you! :)

I can cross off one more "thing to find out when I get to America". It's a long list. :)

I hope Australia follows suit... it was a horrible doctor's appointment when I had to go get EC. Ugh.

I went to my local FPA when I need EC. The lady doctor was lovely, and she gave me the tablets on the spot for like $10. No presciption or going to a chemist.

I felt the system in Australia was great, considering I was only 15 when I needed it.

Ah, I'm glad you had a better time of it than me. I went in, the doctor (who I'd never seen before) made me feel stupid and irresponsible, then told me I should be on the pill and wrote a prescription for it without discussing any other options.

I can understand that it is a good system. I just had a terribly humiliating and upsetting experience with it.

Woah. Sorry to hear that.

In my case, the condom broke. The doctor was fantastic. She gave me SO many broucheres on the available methods of BC and explained them all extensively. She answered all mine and my boyfriend's questions and convinced us both to have STD testing to be safe and aware of our health. She was great.

At Planned Parenthood here it's $30, that's about the cheapest I've ever heard. Cheaper than an abortion or a baby, though.

The clinic I used to work at dispensed it for $15; this was over a year ago though. I've also had women tell me that they could get it for their insurance copay at a pharmacy, which for most plans is <$30.

I've gotten it for free from PPH in michigan and california, so i think the price can vary greatly depending on where you are.

It all depends on when you ovulate. Doctors generally say that you ovulate right in the middle of your cycle, but they haven't got it down to an exact science. So in a typical 28 day cycle, day 14. Unless you are tracking your cervical mucous and daily waking tempurature... there is no real way of knowing when you ovulate.

You can get pregnant at any time in your cycle. If you are worried, go get some emergency contraception now. If you are in Canada, it is available OTC. Elsewhere, I couldn't tell you.

Just adding to what everyone else has said--

For more information on pregnancy tests, go to www.peeonastick.com

You should be able to get plan B over the counter if you're in the US and you're over 18. Call the pharmacies nearest you and make sure they have it. Depending on if you have insurance or not, it will probably cost you between $20 and $50. You can check on that over the phone too. If that's more than you can afford, remember that first off it's cheaper than the alternative, but in any case check out your nearest Planned Parenthood or student health care center, where you may be able to get it for less. Plan B is most effective the sooner it's taken, so try to get it ASAP if you're going to take it.

It's not the most likely thing for you to get pregnant from sperm in his precum right after you finished your period, but it is possible. Sperm can live for several days in your body, and if you ovulate early, that would be enough.

I don't know how old you are but in most state I believe you need to 18 to purchase it OTC. If you are under 18 you need to consult PP or your physician. I think my local CVS & Walgreen have it for $42.

I recommend taking EC (emergency contraception, brand name plan B) as soon as possible, reading the EC FAQ here (http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=Emergency_Contraception_FAQ). You can take a pregnancy test when your period is due, or two weeks after the incident you're concerned about, whichever comes first. And I would recommend being tested for sexually transmitted infections as well; you can do that as early as two weeks after the incident, though you may want/need to be retested at later intervals.

Take care.

while it's true that you can get pregnant any time during your cycle, and every woman's cycle is different, there are some generalizations we could make. say you start your period on the first of may, a 'normal' cycle would have you ovulating around the 14th, and you are most likely to get pregnant for about five days on either side of ovulating, taking into account the life span of eggs and sperms. all this being said every woman is different and you are the best judge of these things, and will have more decision making tools if you are familiar with your own cycle.

Date: 2007-05-05 06:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] diamondxavenue.livejournal.com
First, where did that first condom go? If it got lost inside of you, you should probably search for it just in case. You don't want any nasty infections.

Second, the first day that you start your period s day one of your cycle. Most studies say that you ovulate two weeks before your next period, so find the next day when you would normally start your period and count back fourteen days. That will tell you what day you would normally ovulate on. If you have sex the week before that, it's more likely that you'll get pregnant, especially if you're having egg-white consistency-discharge. From what you said about it being two days after your period ended, it seems that you're at risk.

I would get Plan B if you can. If you're not 18, get someone who's 18 to buy it for you. It's probably about $40-50, and you should take it ASAP.

I know you're saying that you don't regret it, and I'm glad you didn't feel unsafe, but I wanted to say about alcohol and sex, that there are so many ways for alcohol to make a sexual situation really unhealthy and unconsentual, because people aren't in a state of mind to think about it. I just want to put that concept out there because situations like that in the future, where you may be too drunk to know what you're doing and therefore not be safe or even know what's going on, can be prevented just by practicing good party tactics: thinking about what decisions you want to make beforehand and communicating them to friends so they know when to intervene, knowing who you trust, having control over drinking, you and friends looking after and not leaving each other, etc.

STDs?

I'm surprised no ones mentioned STDs. Because it fell off, you are at risk for contracting STDs from him. Has he been tested negative? I encourage you to get tested after this as well.

I definitely agree that getting tested for STIs -- at their appropriate time intervals -- is a great idea, but I'm wondering if your wording here could be making the OP feel bad for not knowing this (if indeed she didn't know -- it may simply not have been relevant to her post). Maybe this is just my own interpretation, but when I read "Um, yea?" and the "MAYBE" all in caps, I felt like it was implying that this is something the OP should have already known. This isn't a judgment (only assuming others shared my interpretation, of course) we can or should be making in VP since it can prevent people from feeling comfortable enough to ask exactly these sorts of questions.

Ah. Drunken random sex. Been there done that. Once it was with someone I met that same night (hey, i was traveling on my own in Australia, it was meant to happen! Duh. Appearently this is normal for backpackers in Oz.) Anyway, you were smart about it and tried to be safe, so I'm glad about that.

However, yes it's likely you are at risk. You are at EVERY moment you have sex! Regardless if you use protection. Nothing is 100%.

Also, the fact that you didn't orgasm has nothing to do with getting pregnant, only for the man when he ejaculates. He may or may not have. With some men, I notice that they are quiet and you cannot tell at all if they came or not. It drives me nuts! lol. So it is very possible that he did.

With others, I could tell either because they would tell me during or I felt it in their body movements, or heard it in their sounds. Interesting how everyone is so different......

ANYWAY. I think your questions were answered by most comments. Just make sure to use condoms properly next time, okey dokey? Don't worry, it will come naturally with practice and experience. Heck, i have a hard time with them since i always let the guy do it.

Assuming that he did come in you, if you just got off your period 2 days ago, then your chances are still pretty slim but you could take EC if you're really concerned.

This has happened to me a couple times and I decided not to take EC because it was such an extremely slim chance, but waiting a whole month to get my period again sucks. It helps a lot to check my cervical position every day and if it's still low 5 days after the incident then I know that it's been long enough for sperm to die before I ovulated (ovulation makes your cervix retreat further up into your vagina). Doing that gives me more peace of mind.
