Hurts to pee

I went to the gyno a couple hours ago. She did a 'vaginal swab' but, she put it in my pee hole, and I have no clue why. But, it was extremely painful. After that...I got lightheaded. 

When I went to go pee afterwords, it was seriously horrible and it was bleeding.

Now, five hours later, I need to pee...but it's serious so excruciating....what should i do?

Besides find a new gyno? o-o Drink lots and lots of water! Keep your urine diluted as possible. This will both help prevent a bladder infection, and stop the urine from burning as much. Take some ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and ease your pain a bit. Speaking from the experience of the cytoscopy (camera inserted into the bladder via the urethra) aftercare recommendations.

Oh and contact your doctor and find out if there was any reason for them to swab your urethra or if they just plain missed your vagina entirely. If you don't feel comfortable asking them you can request a copy of your records. I do suggest if this was a mistake, get it documented and alert the medical review board. A gyno that can't tell a urethra from a vagina should probably not be practicing.

*cringes* urethra is tiny.. swab IN it? ouch! maybe take an ice pack and rest it against it for a little relief, if your body, er, layout allows for it to be comfortable. [ie not too sensitive or awkward with your labia.]

Urethras do vary in size, but the doctor really should have warned if the intended target was the urethra -- and as lilsonbird said, if the doctor can't tell a urethra from a vagina... Um, WHAT? NO! BACK TO MED SCHOOL!

Is it possible she was swabbing for a UTI culture? I don't think that is general practice, but that's the only reason I can think of off the top of my head to swab the urethra. (Though I'm not a doctor, I'm sure there are other reasons.)

But, as lilsongbird said, drinking lots of water to dilute your urine will help. Also, you might try icing the area with some frozen vegetables in the bag, if you have them on hand - be sure to wrap them in a towel, rather than applying directly. It should help with any inflammation in the area. Also, if you can, try an anti-inflammatory such as Aleeve.

If it isn't feeling better by tomorrow, you should consider giving your doctor a call back to get their insight.

Nope, I was going in for a yeast infection. And when she swabbed and I cringed and yelped in pain she said 'yea those are a little sore for yeast infections', as if she was talking about it hurting in my vagina, but that's clearly not where she put it.

My pleasure - sorry you're having to go through this. I would definitely give your doctor a call tomorrow and ask what exactly was done, and explain that it is still causing you a lot of pain.

Also, to empathize what helenkacan said, because I completely forgot - definitely don't over ice things if you decide to go that route - it can cause even more problems!

In that case... yeah she just totally missed. :/ In future it may be best to say something to the doctor at the time, but I understand not everyone is comfortable doing so. I'm assuming she gave you metrodiazonal (sp?) if she was swabbing for yeast. Word of warning- it will itch and burn like hell when you insert it for a few minutes, so if the infection isn't too bad you may wish to wait a day for the swelling of your urethra to subside before starting it.

Further to what a commenter above posted, only use the icepack/frozen veggies bag FIVE MINUTES EVERY HOUR. 'Cuz you don't want to freeze healthy tissue.

The other thing is that, if it still hurts to pee after you've drunk all that water, pee in the shower with warm water flowing gently against your vulva.

Definitely keep drinking water (cranberry pills can help with the health of your urethra), and call some medical professional tomorrow. If another doc at the gyno's office is available, they would be a good first step. Your general practitioner is another person--just not her!

Ice packs may help too. You can get a urinary analgesic (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000619/), but be warned: It will turn your urine so dark that they can't do a visual exam of your urine for something like a UTI. This is probably not an issue, unless another doc wants to do a follow-up that involves peeing in a cup. (If that's the case, and your urine is too dark, they'll probably just culture it.)

Also, in the NuvaRing pamphlet, they warn against inserting the Ring into the urethra. So maybe in some people, the urethra is more open and prominent than is usually seen?

i can tell you that when inserting a foley cath (urine catheter) sometime you do insert it in the vaginal cavity not the urethra. genitalia is usually not as neatly laid out as shown in the text books. I have seen some women with very large urethral openings.

I'd actually stay away from cranberry til it's less painful- cranberry makes the urine acidic, which is part of how it gets rid of bacteria. Having had a camera shoved up there which was preceded by a swab to apply a little lidocaine (which wore off WAY too fast), I can say anything acidic is a total no no til stuff heals. This includes orange juice, cranberry, tomatoes... anything that makes your urine more acidic will hurt like hell when you pee. Bland diet and lots of plain water is best.

The urethra can be swabbed to check for a specific type of bacterial infection (UTI) that lives only in the urethra, not in the bladder. Warning should have been given though, as it huuuurrrrtttts (as you clearly know). Get yourself some Uristat (also known as Phenazophridine). This will soothe the irritated lining of the urethra. Does turn your urine bright orange and any stray drops stain though!

It is also worth mentioning that if they were doing a lab test on the urethral swab, with the intention of testing for the UTI, it is not exactly cheap (depending on your insurance of course - the bill they sent me was $300 before insurance was applied).

having collected samples for STI/STD infections in the past i can tell you that in both male and females the urethra has to be swabbed, although usually more in males than females. maybe she saw some skin breakdown (possible side effect of a yeast infection externally) and decided to swab that area as well?
drink lots of water to help neutralize the pH of your urine and to help flush the system/urethra. if peeing normally is not working, do a sitz bath. you can also fill some water in the bath tub and pee in there and just shower off after.

I'm a nurse who has inserted many a catheter and I can tell you urethras vary in size & placement a great deal. Ive seen some located in the vagina some right above some that look like a second clitoris some that are big and some it takes 5 nurses to find(poor girl)... But anyways. Seems odd she would swab there for a yeast infection. UTI I could see but I am no DR and do not work at a gyno office. I agree she should have warned you there was going to be penetration.
