Hi. A couple of weeks ago i wrote here complaning of UTI symtoms. When i went to the doctor i discovered i was correct and it indeed was a UTI. I was on CIPRO (sp?) which is a very strong medication given for UTIs. After i was finished the meds i seemed fine. I got my period not long after that and everything seemed to be perfectly normal. Yesterday i went to the doctor for a yearly check up. The doctor took a urine sample to check to make sure everything was ok. Ironically today i recieved a call from the doctor and he said he found protein, bacteria, and traces of blood in my urine which indicated a UTI. He put me back on the same medicine this time, instead of a week, for 10 days. As you can tell from past posts i am a very nervous girl, especially when it comes to my vagina. I have had many UTIs in the past so i know for sure, just like every other girl in my family, i am prone to them. My question, however, is... is it possible for it not to be cured? I mean i took the medicine, and i hadnt had sex during or after my last UTI, so is it still possible for it to reoccur? Or is it a sign of something worse? The doctor said it was a UTI but could it still be an STD or would he know if it was that? I am having no sign of a UTI right now but it is still showing up in my urine. I would also like to add that during the time i had the UTI i didnt really take it easy like i was told to. I still went to the gym, went swimming, and i didnt drink as much water as i should have. I dont know if that could cause a problem. Thanks for the help!

Some people are particularly prone to them, if you're worried you still have it maybe you should get re-checked. If it were an STI, your doctor would have known. They can detect things like chlamydia from the bacteria in your urine, and it's a good thing too since the symptoms can be similar between the two. I'm sure it was a UTI.

Other than that you're doing what you should to prevent it - eat healthy, stay hydrated, you should be fine. :)

Sometimes bacteria can be stubborn. I had an upper respiratory infection that had to be treated three times (with two different types of antibiotics) before it went away once. Chances are you still have a little bit of the infection, so to make sure it's really out of there, the dr. upped the dose.

I'm also prone to UTIs, and I have had one recurr after finishing a course of antibiotics. In that instance, I think it was because I didn't do everything I should have (not drinking enough water, etc.) I wouldn't worry too too much. I try to take a cranberry pill most days to try to prevent them. Oh my god I hate UTIs. I just had one last week. : (

I have a very old doctor who told me that when he was in school UTIs were to be treated with anti-biotics for no less than 21 days to fully wipe the infection out of your system. There are stronger anti-biotics that work in fewer doses (like a 3 pill z-pak) and doctors prescribe them more. My doctor doesn't prescribe anti-biotics for 21 days, but never less than 2 pills a day for 10 days (sometimes 14). That's my longwinded way of saying that you probably do only need a longer course of treatment. ;)

if you are prone to them and have had a lot, then the bacteria may be resistant to the antibiotics now. they might even have to switch kinds to fully treat your UTIs.

Probably the strain you have is resistant to the cipro. I was on it once for a UTI that was resistant to something else. Hmm I would be careful though, because if it doesn't hurt the infection might have moved upwards, to your bladder or kidney. Drink lots of water and if you have lower back pain on both sides see the doctor again!
