I'm sick of being so pale, and since I have relatives who have had skin cancer, tanning is right out. So I want to try a sunless tanner. Are they safe to use on the bikini area? Are they effective? I'd like to use it on the area where I shave - will it be horribly irritating on that skin?

I've never used any kind of sunless tanner before, so any other suggestions you might have would be great, too.

i suggest getting one of those uv-free spray tans. they might cost a little more than a bottle thing, but they're much more consistant. just stand in there naked and they get you all over. but make sure you rub yourself down reeeeally thoroughly when you get out cause otherwise you get streaks. i got one for a pagent thing i was in and it turned out really well...

Don't shave for at least 24 hours before and after a spray tanning session, and use their barrier cream liberally anywhere on your hands or feed that you don't want turning orange!! Also, if your skin is sensitive or at all irritated, wait until whatever irritation is there to heal before doing a spray tan session. I tried it out a week and a half before my bridal portraits last year and was a tad bit singed from laying out in the sun a few days before, and I got chemical burns/allergic reactions wherever my skin was sensitive from actual UV tanning! Red itchy sploches all over my neckline, chest, back, stomach and butt, and I don't consider myself to have sensitive skin in general. It was awful. Luckily I tried it early enough that most of the rash was gone by the time my bridal portraits came around. I'm nervous about trying one again, but I too cannot tan anymore: the excess of estrogen in my body from my HBC pills gave me melasma, which gets a LOT worse with even a little UV exposure. :(

P.S. Spray tans usually only last about a week or so.

I use it near my bikini line/over the mons, and I'm fine. Just wait a while after shaving. As for color, a gradual tanner works great. I'm super white and it builds color gradually so it's not like "OMG TAN!" and streaks are very unlikely or not very noticable because of how it develops.

I haven't used a tanner on my bikini line or my pubic mons, but I have used one on my face. It was specially designed to be a facial tanner, so I'm wondering if it would have the added benefit of being gentler, as well as less streak-prone, if used on the bikini line.

It's a thought. :)

yeah meghan's idea is probably the best one. i'd get a decent brand product though, like 'tan-do attitude' from bath and body works. i'm madd pale too so trying to get a hxc tan all at once would turn me orange. i've heard that the endless summer one is good too. i know you can get that in a drugstore.

Dove and Jergens both make a really cool form of sunless tanner, that isn't an unnatural sudden orange color.
It's the stuff that you use as a regular lotion every day all over, and it will gradually give you a literally natural tan.

It rocks. That's what I would recommend, as one pale person to another.

I use Jergins. I do recomend you exfoliate your legs a thoroughly beforehand. I shave my legs right before hand, but not my pubic area. Otherwise, the follicles on my legs turn a slightly deeper color.

and yeah, if you use Jergins and only apply it every other day, it will still give you some color. I forgot to apply it to the backs of my knees the first time and you could see the difference.

Oh yeah, the follicle issue (and the noticable difference one, too) may be attributed to the fact that I am super fair complected and chose a lotion for medium skin tones (damn my impatience!).

I tried a Neutrogena lotion before and didn't really like it...it was semi-streaky and semi-orange (I didn't put much on either). In my opinion, if effective to you means looking like a real tan from the sun then they're not effective BUT maybe I just haven't tried the right sunless tanner??

I'm very pale, and have anemia, deficit of red blood cells which makes u pale, and vitialgo, spots on my body where there is no pigment at all. I've tried almost all of the sunless tanners, spray tans, and bronzers available. Besides regular tanning, nothing really turns you a tan color since it all has extra bronzers. There is, however, this tanning wipe, tantowel, that has a chemical that reacts with the melanin in your skin to turn you darker. It's a little pricey but it works better than anything I've ever tried, besides real tanning that is. If everything seems to turn you orange, embrace your paleness. I finally did, even though my boyfriend, who is hispanic, looks VERY tan next to me and makes me wish I was tan.. but o well. Just think about it this way... in a few years.. you will still have gorgeous skin compared to the girls that tan on a regular basis.
