I started NuvaRing on the 29th of September and I had to take it out Friday morning (October 3rd) because my vaginal walls were so swollen I could hardly even get my smallest finger inside, and it hurt more than anything I've experienced. I can't have sex without it hurting, still. It still feels swollen. I've never had anything like this happen. I read about some girl experiencing something similar- irememberaurora, if I remember correctly.

When is the pain going to stop? It feels like having sex with a really bad infection, and it hurt terribly to pee afterwards (it was stinging my gina), but I don't have an infection of any sort. I don't know what to do.

Any help would be great.

love,
kylie.

I would suggest going back to your gyno to find out what's wrong.

Some OTC suggestions

OK, so I'm no doctor, but here are some ideas for temporary relief. You should also call your GYN's office and leave a message with the service that you need to talk to someone ASAP. Most GYN's will have somebody covering for them if they're out for several days like that.

Tylenol (acetominophen), Motrin (ibupropfen), and Aspirin all relieve pain and reduce swelling and inflamation, you could take one of these to try to relieve some of the discomfort. An ice pack (brr!) might help (make sure there is cloth of some sort between you and the ice bag!) for similar reasons.

You may be having an allergic reaction to some component of the ring, in which case any antihistimine would help.

Otherwise, yeah, your GYN, or some GYN, needs to see you as soon as possible. I hope you feel better very soon, that sounds awful.

Even if it does go away...I would still see a doc...just to make sure there is no infection.

a few ideas

have you ever had pain with sex before? I have a neurological vulvar pain condition called vulvodynia. The aread around my vaginal opening is very painful, as well as a tiny bit inside...not deep inside though. Where is your pain exactly located?

Perhaps you are having an allergic reaction to whatever was in the NuvaRing. This may sound funny, but putting a bag of frozen peas against the area might help alleviate the swelling and pain. I have also heard of people filling a condom with frozen peas or something frozen and sticking the tip in their vagina.

Hope this helps a bit. =) Good luck and best wishes!

Some self-care possibilities

Another possibility is that the ring has irritated your gina & caused a yeast infection, or possibly that yeasties have passed from your partner to you.
Brewing a strong herbal tea from cooling/healing herbs such a s chickweed, calendula flowers, & comfrey leaf, (use 1 cup of dried herbs per gallon of water; let the water boil, add herbs, cover & let steep until room temp.; strain out herbs, put in a squirt bottle, & squirt it into the vag) is a good place to start, whatever the cause of the irritation is. Witch hazel or aloe vera might also offer some relief.
For a good start on an internal home cure for yeasties, take good quality garlic oil capsules (I usually take 12 for the first dose & taper off from there), or eat lots of raw garlic, as it is a natural antibiotic & helps the immune system to do its job. Drink lots of water; with grapefruit juice, unsweetened cranberry juice, or lemon is even better (yeasties dislike an acid environment).

There are also some good practical suggestions here: http://www.egregore.com/diseases/vaginitis.html (things like eliminating all sweets & alcohol from the diet is extremely helpful, as they depress the immune system, and yeasties also thrive on sugar).

While I'm not an herbalist, these are things that I've done myself that have offered some relief/healing.

Rosemary Gladstar's book "Herbal Healing for Women" is an excellent reference for this as well as being great for all sorts of practical traditional wisdom about women's health.

Hope you feel better soon.
