sprtwrid.livejournal.comI made a post last week about having a possilbe UTI and yeast infection going at once. I am pretty sure I edited it after my visit to the ER to state that they were treating me for both. I got Bactrim for the UTI and Diflucan for the yeast. The UTI went away with no problems but the yeasty survived the Diflucan, and will be attacked with a second round tonight.
The day i went to pick up my meds, I decided to pick up a bottle of Acidophilus Probiotic Gold (it had the most of the bacteria per serving: over 1 billion per serving at the time of manufacture compared to the 100,000 on the other bottles). That night, i took my meds, plus two of these capsules and the next day I did see some improvement.I have taken these capsuls every day since.
About 3 days ago, I decided to go ahead and inster a capsule, just to see if it would help. I figurd it couldnt hurt. I still had the infection and was desperate to get rid of it. I did see improvement the next morning, but let me just say, my crotch felt like it was full of sand after that experiment.
Yesterday I had my follow up appointment with the doctor, and they asked me about half a million questions about my YI history. I told them that normally when i get one if i just start taking probiotics and lay off the sugar it clears up on its own. Then i mentioned that i tried a direct application after the meds i was given failed. The doctor was completely dumbfounded as to why i would do it, so i linked him to several posts and the vulvapedia. He thought it was insane that anyone would try what i did, and even more crazy that anyone would put yogurt in there. Interesting but weird in his opinion.
So he did the exam, which was a whole other story (i had the kids with me...) and after all was said and done, i still have the yeasty. He wrote me another script for diflucan and said: do not take those probiotics, and definitely do not put any in there. We can not be positive that isnt what caused this infection not to go away.
On one hand I can understand why he said that, but on the other: I had good information to back up my choice. There were plenty of references that i had provided even if they were blogs. I do not believe that my experiment is what caused this yi not to respond to the meds. This is definitely the first one that didnt respond to the meds I have ever had though. I waited until a day or two after the 3 days marker they told me it would take for the meds to work. At that point i had a few days to wait at least until i could get seen again (i wasnt supposed to be seen until this friday). Is it possible the capsuls made the YI stay longer. My gut tells me no, since they have worked for me in the past. Should i stop using them even though I am doing better a little more every day? Do I continue because they do seem to be helping, even if its not the mirical cure?
BTW: The look on the doctors face when I asked a certain question was priceless. It was: How many YIs should i have before we consider treating my husband as well?
He asked me why i would say that and I responded that it is a known fact that men and women can pass YI's back and forth with the male having no symptoms. He asked where i learned that and I told him from my last GYN when i kept getting infections, and prior to that, every medical book I owned and even my old Girl Talk book from the 80's. He said it wasnt possible and i laughed at him. Thankfully I do not have to deal with that particular doctor again, since my normal doc will be back in two weeks. He said that if the diflucan doesnt take care of it this time, we would consider getting him checked out too. Small victory at least.
After the appointment was over, the student doctor that was in the room pulled me aside and told me he never met anyone who knew as much about their own bodies as i seemed to, and he thanked me for giving him something new to research since he had never heard of the yogurt or any other treatments for YIs. That was pretty cool.
