I'm just curious, does anything bad happen if you don't treat BV? The only time I've ever had it, I barely knew anything was wrong. So, if it can go away on it's own, that'd be nice. I realize there are home remedies and such, but there wouldn't be much point for me, if I can barely tell I have an infection in the first place.

Personally, when I had BV I barely knew anything was wrong either... until I had excruciating pain in my right ovary. :( I'd really suggest getting it treated, lest yours spread too. I had a whole slew of thoroughly unpleasant tests done before they figured out it was BV.

It can increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, which is considerably more painful and complicated than BV. From what I've read, it doesn't generally go away on its own like a YI can.

Any kind of untreated vaginal infection can lead to PID - which can not only cause a great deal of pain, but can cause you to have difficulty conceiving, carrying child, and even make you infertile. Also, you can pass any bacterial, viral, or fungal infection to your partner (although it's less likely for a guy to actually GET the infection because he doesn't have a nice warm, dark, moist environment like we do :) ) who can pass it back to you (if you've gotten treated) or on to others. It only takes a few days of antibiotics or a quick shot in the rump to get rid of it anyway :)

Good luck!

Any kind of untreated vaginal infection can lead to PID...

From what I'm seeing -- in sources like the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/std/PID/STDFact-PID.htm#howget) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (http://www.umm.edu/ency/article/000888.htm) -- it looks like untreated bacterial infections can lead to PID, not necessarily all vaginal infections. For yeast infections, for example, PID is not mentioned as a possible complication (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/MEDLINEPLUS/ency/article/001511.htm#Complications).

Unlike a YI, BV does not have any effective home remedies that I am aware of.

BV can actually be treated with boric acid in the same way as a YI. :)

Hmm, I had BV once, caught by a pap smear - I didn't notice any symptoms. My GP said that honestly, it wasn't a big deal, just to eat more yogurt and drink lots of water. It seemed to totally clear up. No ovary pain or PID...however now after reading this I'm a bit worried.

Honestly though, I had another pap last winter and they didn't find any sign of BV so I guess it went away.

Anyway, I guess now if I do get it again I will go for the treatment, just in case. Does that make sense?
