Hi folk,

The Cochrane Collaboration is an international institute recognised globally for providing the absolute best summaries going on medical topics - Cochrane reports are the gold standard.

I was poking around the site for other reasons, and it turns out that as of March last year there's a new review of endometriosis, looking at state-of-the-art pain-management strategies and their impact on pregnancy and live birth rates. Thought some of you might be interested!

Hi!

So Because Of Reasons I just ended up doing a quick bit of research on how much we know about the effects of lubricants on sperm and therefore on trying to conceive. All links go to paywalled articles, but I'm pulling the info from the publically-viewable abstracts (can read in more depth if anyone's keen for me to do so).

A 1998 in vitro study found that all the forms of lube they tested had a negative effect on sperm motility. In 2011 an in vitro comparison of "nonspermicidal" lubricants found that Felis, Replens, and Aquasonic Gel had negative effects on sperm, but Pre-Seed (... what a terrible name) was fine. In April we've got another in vitro study comparing a wider range of lubricants (modified human tubal fluid (mHTF) control and in 10% Pre-Seed, Astroglide, and KY products (Sensitive, Warming, and Tingling) and baby, canola, sesame, and mustard oils), again finding that of the commercially-produced lubricants Pre-Seed and baby oil were the least bad for sperm, with mustard oil having an... interesting effect. Yet Another In Vitro Study (March 2014, comparing Sylk, Conceive Plus, glycerol (!!!), Johnson's Baby Oil, SAGE Culture Oil, Yes, Forelife, MaybeBaby and Pre-Seed) found again that Pre-Seed was best for vitality and Forelife was worst; Pre-Seed was best for motility and Sylk the worst; and none of these lubricants had any impact on DNA integrity; Conceive Plus was apparently the second-best lube for sperm function.

However, in contrast to in vitro studies, a longitudinal in vivo cohort study published in June (i.e. tracking how long it took actual humans using each type of lube to conceive versus humans not using additional lubricants, as opposed to - coarsely - dumping sperm in a warmed petri dish full of lube and videoing them) showed no effect of lubricant choice & use on ability to conceive.

The authors of that last study understandably call for a randomised controlled trial; in the meantime - and I am not a doctor! - I'd suggest that there's little benefit to avoiding lubricant or buying more expensive lubes (the longitudinal cohort study of actual patients showed no effect), but if you do want to minimise that risk consensus seems to be that Pre-Seed (I am still not over the name) is the way to go.

So my last period started on April 27 and I usually have a 28 day cycle.
SO and I had sex yesterday and he ejaculated inside me. Today I am having ovulation pain which is normal for me. I seem to be ovulating a little earlier than usual but w/e.

Question is, since we can't have sex today for various reasons, is there a good chance I might conceive from the sperm deposited last night? I know sperm can live for a few days in fertile cervical mucous which I started getting two days ago (clear and stretchy). We will have sex again tomorrow but I wasn't sure what the chances are of getting pregnant the day BEFORE you ovulate.

This is not strictly a vagina question, but I hope it is still useful!

A commenter recently mentioned that sperm can live in the vagina for up to a week. This got me wondering if there is any decent research about on how long sperm can live. I'm thinking particularly on something like a hand or sheets, where semen might be spilled, or even mouth/lips as well as inside the vagina.

It would be just as interesting to hear any general comments about how possible it is to become pregnant from sperm transferred into the body by one of these strange routes. I've always believed it's technically possible, but don't know how likely it would be, and how much these are myths.

Hi All!
I seem to have developped a UTI, lucky me, not surprising since we are TTC which means lotsa sex going on.
I have been drinking pure unsweetened and very tart cranberry juice for two days, as well taking and antifungal(Pau Darco and Olive leaf extract) and HMF (Human Microflora) suppliment, and added some vitamin C into the mix last night. I also have been soaking in an epsom bath with pure lavander and tea trea oil as I read that this will help in my natural living encyclopedia. Ok so I was hoping that I would be feeling better by now, (2 days later). Antibiotics are really usually a last resort for me, but I am afraid to be miserable over Christmas.
In all y'alls experience, how effective has it been treating a UTI naturally? How long did it take you to find relief? I just dont know what to do, I am thinking of playing it safe and heading to the walk in clinic were I know they will give me antibiotics.

Another question is, they say not to pee after sex if you are trying to conceive, so I stopped. I am thinking this is what helped bring on the UTI. What are my options here, geesh I want a baby but I also dont want to have to deal with this pain.

Ok I had been on the pill for roughly 4 years after having my son. My husband and I decided that we want to have another baby so I got off the pill in December. Now, while on the pill I had regular, to the day, periods. Ever since I got off them, my cycle is getting longer and longer (I am usually 3 days late each month.) I have been charting and the like but so far no luck. Also, before I had my son, I was not on the pill, and around the middle of the month, I would get a mucus like discharge. No color or smell, just kinda like snot (sorry that's gross). While I was on the pill, I realize now that I never had it. So I guess my question is this: Is this discharge normal. I use a fertility calandar and I just realized today (I am slow on the uptake) that it always happens on my most fertile days. Any help and/or info would be greatly appreciated!

i think this question in on-topic enough, as it concerns our girlie workings and what not.

for those of you having experienced PLANNED pregnancies, how long did it take you to conceive from the time you actually started actively "trying"? thanks. :)
