Ok I had been on the pill for roughly 4 years after having my son. My husband and I decided that we want to have another baby so I got off the pill in December. Now, while on the pill I had regular, to the day, periods. Ever since I got off them, my cycle is getting longer and longer (I am usually 3 days late each month.) I have been charting and the like but so far no luck. Also, before I had my son, I was not on the pill, and around the middle of the month, I would get a mucus like discharge. No color or smell, just kinda like snot (sorry that's gross). While I was on the pill, I realize now that I never had it. So I guess my question is this: Is this discharge normal. I use a fertility calandar and I just realized today (I am slow on the uptake) that it always happens on my most fertile days. Any help and/or info would be greatly appreciated!

That would be the ovulatory mucous (not sure if this is the correct term). It's normal, it means you're fertile. Helps the spermies swim!

It's great to have that! It's your fertile (referred to as "egg white") cervical mucus. Have sex on the days when you have it if you want to conceive. Without it, the sperm can't stay alive.

As for your periods being three days "late," that's not a problem. 28 days is AVERAGE, not normal. If your cycles are 31 days, it's fine, healthy, and normal. And hey, it means you get your period less often. Very few women have 28 day cycles while off the pill!

If you're interested at all in this kind of stuff, I strongly suggest the book "Taking Charge of you Fertility" by Teri Weschler (sp? anyone?). It's awesome and discusses charting in detail.

Check out fertilityfriend.com I don't know much about yourdays.com, but it sounds like you aren't monitoring your fertility signs. Fertility friend explains all about them and how to check them, and it has a program that uses those signs to tell you exactly when you ovulate. It's much more accurate than just counting days from your period(I'm not sure if this is what you're doing, but it sounds like it).

One more thing... about choosing the sex of your baby. The only sure way is IVF, but you can make your chances better by doing certain things and timing intercourse right. TCOYF discusses it a bit, but there is a whole book about it.

I have never read this, but it seems to be the main one on the subject. Once again, realize that it doesn't always work, but, as a chemistry major very interested in women's health, I can say that the theory does have solid science behind it and seems to be semi-logical.

Good luck!

you didnt get it on the pill because you dont ovulate on the pill

The discharge you're having sounds like eggwhite cervical mucus, which is not only normal, it's desirable if you're TTC. It doesn't occur when you're on the Pill because you don't ovulate on the pill.

One thing that may help you a lot is getting a copy of Toni Wechsler's book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It's a fantastic, thorough book that covers everything you might possibly want to know about charting and knowing when you're fertile.

That is the best book. I think that every woman should read it even if they don't use FAM as birth control.

I have to agree about that - I learned a lot from the book, personally, and while I'm not using FAM as birth control (was planning to, but an endometriosis flareup has forced me back onto hormones for pain control), I think it's a fantastic resource.
