So, I have read about the different blood tests that are available for detecting antibodies to the oral and genital herpes viruses. From my understanding, the more widely available tests don't give the most conclusive results and can sometimes give false positives/negatives, and then there are other less available tests that are more highly accurate.

A week or so ago, a situation came up where I felt it would be necessary for me to get tested for the virus, though I have never experienced an outbreak (and I would like to know my status either way).

So, I went to the doctor - and mentioned that I wanted to be tested for HSV-2. She looked at me strangely and asked "why", I told her the situation, and she said:

"Well, we need to take a sample from a present sore in order to test for the virus. There is no such thing as a blood tests that tests for the HSV-2 virus."

I was baffled. I had seen countless entires in this community, and other information on the web that documented this blood test in detail. So I persisted. "It's my understand from doing personal research and through other people who have told me about it that XYZ"

And she said, very rudely I might add, "Whoever gave you that information was lying. There is no such thing as a blood test that tests for antibodies to HSV-1 or HSV-2"

So I said "Oh, do you mean that this test isn't available in Canada or...?"

"No, there is no such thing as that test, I have no idea what you are talking about"

Assuming I was wrong, I came home feeling a little confused and irritated, and decided to get back on the internet and do some more research. And I found PLENTY of information about this test. Am I crazy? Why did this doctor tell me that the test doesn't exist? I called Health Services the next day and complained to the director about my experience because I was rather offended by her in general. The director said she would do some research and inform all of the campus physicians of the issue.

Basically what I want to know is...why did this doctor lie to me? Is it really possible that she has never heard of the test? I feel like it's her job to be informed and not to be rude in situations where she is clearly ill-informed. Or am I crazy; are all of these resources that I've found "fake"?

I am ultra confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated <3

i have a question which i've never found an answer to, so i'm asking you lovely ladies here.

i have the oh-so-fun-and-joyous oral herpes. i had such bad outbreaks that i was put on valtrex about three years ago. i haven't actually had an outbreak in about two years. just randomly, two days ago, one decided to magically appear.

anywho, my question is this [as stupid as it sounds], oral herpes can't magically mutate into genital herpes through oral sex, can it? i remember reading somewhere that it can a while back.

thankyou. =)

I posted about two months ago about getting a herpes sore on my lip. My first outbreak was in eighth grade, when I was 13. I'm 18 now, and the one I got a few months ago was my second outbreak ever.

Since then I have been getting them not in the same spot, every other week. As soon as one is gone, there's another one in a different spot. I've had four so far! I am not sure if I keep reinfecting myself by using the same lip gloss or toothbrushes or what, but I'm definitely going to throw out everything that has touched my mouth.

I can't think of what is causing these outbreaks. Why is my immune system so compromised? I started birth control maybe 9 months ago, so that was a fairly recent change in my life, and I have been mildly stressed out lately, but believe me, I've been through some of the most horrific, stressful events of my life in the last five years with nary an outbreak. I've also never had a problem with dry lips before, and ever since the outbreaks, my lips are so dry and chapped that I had to stop giving my boyfriend head because it was hurting him. I'm really worried about giving this to him, and then getting it in the vag when he goes down on me. I thought that I would just avoid kissing him while I had an outbreak, but at this point they are so frequent that he and I are nuns. I'm going nuts, and they hurt--and give me fevers.

They also look different than they initially did. My first two sores were consistent: just a little patch of three pinhead blisters. Now I get one huge blister that swells up almost beyond the size of a pencil eraser. They are so painful, and when they inevitably pop, they usually get infected. They tend to respond really well to amoxicillin, but I'm worried that I'm going to create a super resistant strain of bacteria in myself if I keep self-medicating and not going through with a full dosage.

What can I do to prevent this? Is there any medication I should suggest to my doctor? Does this still sound like herpes? Any home treatments, besides Abreva, which I'm already using religiously?

Ever since I was a kid, I got white bumps in my mouth every now and then. I'm assuming they are canker sores. I'd like to know if they are considered herpes and if they contagious? Like if I could give it to someone through sharing drinks, kissing, etc?
