cause im sure im not the only one that cant swallow pills :)

(as taken from their website...) so here are the facts...

* Femcon Fe is chewable.
* Femcon Fe can also be swallowed.
* Femcon Fe is spearmint flavored.

...and how they apply to you

* Femcon Fe is small and chewable, so you can discreetly pop it in your mouth wherever you are - the gym, the office, out with friends. It makes it easier to take your pill on time every day.
* It's your choice: Femcon Fe can be swallowed or chewed.* It's effective either way.
* Some women have difficulty swallowing pills, even small ones. With Femcon Fe you can have safe, effective birth control without swallowing pills.

*Immediately followed by a full glass (8 oz.) of liquid.

Why can't you swallow pills? I don't get it. You can swallow liquids and food, right? When I first started taking pain medication, my mom told me it's something you gotta learn, a part of growing up. I don't see how it's so hard.

I don't mean to be demeaning, I just don't get it.

Also, I have femcon fe, going to start it as soon as I'm done my period. My gyno said it can be chewed or swallowed. I wonder what it would taste like.

My co-worker is on the chewable one, and it does taste and smell like mint. (I smelled it, didn't taste it, but she said it tastes like bad gum or good toothpaste...)

I'm wondering that too. I was always told I had to learn; that it was part of growing up and that I couldn't take child-dose chewables and liquid medicines my whole life, and now I can do it like I was born to do it.

And a chewable pill, huh. What's the point if you have to drink a full glass of water afterwards? Isn't the main purpose to be convenient, that you can take it with you wherever you are and not have to worry about when and where you can take it? I don't see it solving the problems it's intending to solve.

Some people just have, for whatever reason, issues swallowing pills. Given that a number of adult medications are now available in doses that don't require swallowing, I have to think that these issues aren't a rarity. And since one of its advertised purposes (http://chewablepill.com/more.php) is because "Some women have difficulty swallowing pills, even small ones. With Femcon Fe you can have safe, effective birth control without swallowing pills," I think this purpose will definitely appeal to some women.

And beyond that, I think it's just nice to have options, whether they're pills (chewable or not), patches, rings, IUDs, etc. There's a huge variety in what different people need and want from their birth control methods. For instance, some people can't remember to take a pill at the same time every day, some are concerned about patches being visible, some have expelled IUDs so can't really use them... No one method is right for everybody, so it's sometimes nice to have a variety of options so that you can choose whichever one is best for you. :)

For some people, there's just a psychological barrier to comfortably swallowing pills. For example, my brother has a fear of vomiting that makes it hard for him to swallow pills. Other people just have trouble swallowing something without chewing, no matter how small it is. It's not a matter of maturity or practice, it's just something some people can't do.

I can swallow big pills, but if I try to swallow a small one, it gets stuck in my throat. I just chew my small pills.

My best friend and I both can't swallow pills. I've tried multiple times. They get stuck in my throat and I either gag and cough them back up, or I have to drink hot water to dissolve them. So now if I have to take pills, I just crush them and put them in applesauce or whatever.

Yeah, if I accidentally swallow candy or something, it gets stuck in my throat and I freak out :P

They do have chewable vitamins...but they're really gross :P

That's great news! We've actually been thinking about adding it to our Vulvapedia entry on hormonal birth control (http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=Hormonal_Birth_Control), since there are plenty of folks out there who can't (or don't like to) swallow pills.

As Alice (http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1985.html) says, "Rest assured that many young adults and some not-so-young adults share your problem. It's understandably strange to swallow a solid substance without chewing; it can seem against natural reflexes (not to mention, against table manners)." ;)

Think you might try the chewable pill?

Yeah, don't sweat the odd responses--we know from experience that a lot of VPers (and people in general) have trouble swallowing pills, since it's a topic that's come up lots in the past. The chewable pill is a great alternative for those folks, and I'm glad you shared it with us!

And don't forget people like me, who have medical reasons that they cannot swallow pills easily. I have a stricture in my esophogus, which means I have to cut my food into pretty small bits, avoid things like meat, and STILL food gets stuck in it. Before I got it dilated, there was a time where I couldn't even take regular tylenol gelcaps.

Do you know if you can get this through Planned Parenthood?

Date: 2007-04-19 12:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nmbr5wthabulet.livejournal.com
doubtful. planned parenthood can only offer certain medications that they get discounts on. if its relatively new/not well known, they aren't likely to have it.
