If you use/used tampons, how long after you started your period did you start using them and how old were you?
My cousin is almost 13 and has had her period for a year and a half but my aunt won't let her use tampons! This isn't like a religious/moral issue, but my aunt just thinks my cousin's body is not "ready" for that? The reason I'm asking is cause my cousin was complaining about using pads when having a heavy flow and how her mom wouldn't let her try tampons.

Date: 2007-01-13 06:17 pm (UTC)I can see an advantage to going a while without using them, because I think that you do get a better sense of what your cycle is like when you're using pads (just because you don't so much see the blood with tampons), but the responsibility with regard to changing them properly is the main reason I can think of for not having a very young girl use them.

Date: 2007-01-13 06:29 pm (UTC)I remember when I was 13 I tried to use tampons and I simply couldn't 'cos it hurt too much and felt like I wasn't doing it properly (like how far into does this have to go?) and had to stick to pads

Date: 2007-01-13 06:35 pm (UTC)I hated pads so much, and they irritate my vagina a lot, so I really didn't like using them, so once I was out of the house, that's all I use. I feel your friend's pain though.

Date: 2007-01-13 07:24 pm (UTC)But really, have your aunt talk to your cousin about using them. Let her know about TSS (don't scare her, of course!), how to use them the right way, all that jazz. Girls, even that young, will most likely remember stuff that pertains to their periods because it's kind of a big deal to them. If your aunt still doesn't feel ready to let her daughter use tampons (which is fine, she's her daughter) then that's okay - at least her daughter will understand why! :)

Date: 2007-01-13 08:22 pm (UTC)I think 13 is a fine age and as long as your cousin is responsible enough to change them every few hours to avoid TSS, I see no reason why her body wouldn't be ready for them - I know girls who lost their virginity at 13 and 14, so bodies are definitely ready for tampons at that age!

Date: 2007-01-13 09:14 pm (UTC)I think that some women think that a tampon either encourages promescuity because you're putting something in your vagina, or that it might some how devirginize you. Very silly, but some people are told this by someone they believe has reliable information such as a church pastor, or their own mothers.

Date: 2007-01-13 09:17 pm (UTC)I started using them at 16 [having gotten my period at 14], but it took me a while to first overcome the psychological factor of "sticking something inside" [I was obviously still a virgin and the concept of something going in terrified me], and second, to actually learn the rope [I'm a nervous, tight one].
I know that both Kotex and O.B. have itty-bitty tiny tampons for first-timers and virgins. They are obviously also good for very young girls, such as your cousin. They are not very efficient for heavy flow, but if you use them and a pad at the same time, you can go by longer without changing [good for school days and nights].

Date: 2007-01-13 09:34 pm (UTC)But I was also pretty familiar with my vagina/vulva (I masturbated often and looked at it with mirrors and stuff), and has talked a lot with my mom about her period, so none of it was scary for me.

Date: 2007-01-13 09:43 pm (UTC)My mom always said that tampons were for women who had already had sex, so I wasn't really allowed to use them when I lived with her. I started using them a while after I moved in with my dad because I bought my "feminine products" myself and he didn't really care what I used.
