I started my period when I was 13, and my mom never wanted me to use tampons because of a bad experience she had with them back in the '80s. But a year-ish later I got involved with marching band, which required me to be outside for hours at a time without much chance for bathroom breaks and my flow was sooo heavy, so she pretty much had to let me start using them around age 14, 14 1/2
