ive read all the posts about cryotherapy, colopscopy, etc, but i still have some questions...

okay so I posted here a few weeks ago asking about colopscopy, how painful was it, etc. the nurse said it wasnt going to hurt too much, and just to take a few motrin before i went in. which i did. i took 800mg of motrin. well i went and had it done, and it was extremely painful. the motrin didnt do sh!t. i cried alot. i have been praying to get a call telling me that it was nothing.

So this morning i got a phonecall letting me know that the results came back still as Low Grade Dysplasia, and they want to do cryotherapy. Needless to say I am very scared that this is going to hurt way worse, and i dont think i can handle it. The nurse says that I need to get it done so that it doesn't progress into more moderate dysplasia. she also said that they use a local anesthesia, lydocaine or something, on the cervix, before doing the cryotherapy, but i dont know if i trust that enough to ease the pain. if i end up having to do this i think im going to take a couple vicodin or oxycodone (if i can get my hands on some)

I have been researching online alot about this, and ive been reading that something like 80% of cases of mild dysplasia will disappear without treatment. But i dont know if i should take that risk or not. I really should call up and talk to the Dr. more I guess and ask questions.

So my question for those of you who have had both colopscopy and cryotherapy, which hurts worse? and have any of you had mild/low grade dysplasia, done nothing, and have it go away? or have any of you had the laser treatment instead of cryo? im not sure if the laser option is available, i may need to go somewhere else for that.

thank you for any information or advice.

I think the key to a good medical experience is relaxation. Sure, the procedure might hurt, but it won't hurt forever, so don't worry so much! And even if you're not mentally relaxed, relaxing your muscles makes a huge difference. Do some deep breathing before you go in, and remember that everything will be fine eventually.

hi, sweetie! i just went throught ALL of this. (just had my cryo on tuesday, actually)
im sorry that the colp hurt you.

i can tell you, that my colp was far more nerve-wrecking and "painful" (as far as actual pain on my cervix goes) than my cryo. the vinegar solution they put on my cervix for the colp burned, and they also took a biopsy, which (while it wasnt unbearable) was a feeling i really dont want to feel again.

different people will tell you different things when it comes to cryo. for instance, i heared horror stories.
with ME, the prodecure was at the very least only moderately uncomfortable. i took 800mg of motrin before i went to my appointment. and the ONLY discomfort i felt were cramps that felt -exactly- like my normal menstrual cramps. there was NO pain on my cervix at all (and they didnt put anything on mine to numb it first). the only sensation on my cervix was a bit of a cold feeling. but not nearly as cold as you would expect.
the cramps stay steady through the whole procedure. i was worried that they would gradually get worse as the freezing went on, but they stay exactly the same.
just lay back, concentrate on breathing, and RELAX as best as possible. it makes it a lot easier on you.

if you want to ask me anything more specific, i'll try my best to answer your questions. =)

i would actually advise taking ibuprofen over taking vicodin.
yea, the vicodin is a stronger pain reliever.
but for cryo, you need an NSAID (like...ibuprofen, or naproxen).
neither the hydrocodone nor tylenol in vicodin are going to give you the antiinflammatory effect you need.

also. the cryo feels NOTHING like the biopsy.
it just causes some cramping. =)
i honestly think you'll be fine.

I'm no expert....but I don't know if ANY kind of dysplasia will go away on it's own. When they first do a papsmear, and the results come back "abnormal" - they might wait a while and see if your body was just doing something weird and may change but from what I was told is that dysplasia means your cells are starting to CHANGE. And as you know - it progresses. If you want, I'm sure you could get a 2nd opinion from another doctor, or like you said - ask your doctor some more questions. I'm sure they've had a TON of patients before you that have been scared and have questions and they should give you all the information you want to know!

I went for my annual pap every year as a good girl should and back in April it came back as moderate-severe dysplasia. This was considered pre-cancerous so I actually had to go to the hospital, be put under, and have a cone biopsy of my cervix which is where they basically cut a chunk of it out instead of just freezing or lasering to make sure they got all the bad cells out. Obviously I was out for the the procedure but afterwards they just told me to take Ibuprofen or something but even after getting a moderate chunk of my cervix cut out, I was in barely any pain at all!

Even if cyro is moderately painful, as others have said - it's VERY temporary and it's worth doing the procedure rather than risking cervical cancer.

Good luck!

If it's really that bad, have them refer you to someone who has an anesthesiologist. I refused cryotherapy because my colp made me spaz out, hurt like nothing else EVER, and I HATED it. My gyno referred me to a specialist (gynecologic oncologist) who, if I need one, will give me a LEEP and put me under general anesthesia.
