So I go for months without a period. Just went for almost a year without one. Yipee! Right? Wrong. Cause the opposite is happening now. Heavy period going for weeks. I go between bleeding heavily and lightly and never know how much from day to day. This pattern has been going on for years, and I know I can take meds to regulate my period, I just don't like having to go to the doctor time and again for refills on the meds and quite frankly I like going months on end without a period.

Okay, so my question is this: This happens (the doctor says) because of my weight. (I am very heavy) Is there any way other than medicine to stop my period? I don't want to go into the doctor, and be put on monthly 10 days worth of meds that jump start my period. I have a hard (impossible) time remembering to take it. Then of course there is that whole monthly having to deal with my period. Hate that time of the month, rather have no period at all.

Second question: Any reason why I should be having a regular period?

If people can take Seasonale (a birthcontrol pill) to have a period only 4 times a month, I don't see why you can't skip them, too. I used to have them every third month when I was younger. It wasn't until I was in my late 20's and on the pill that my period came monthly, and I'm not heavy. If you think there's a real medical concern with not having periods, discuss it with your doctor and tell him/her that you don't mind skipping so much.

Have you been screened for thyroid problems and/or PCOS? The symptoms you describe (weight and irregular cycles) can be symptoms of either one.

There are complications, like endometrial hyperplasia, which can be a precursor to more serious problems which may result when the lining of the uterus doesn't shed periodically. Regularly, not so much, but more frequently than once a year is generally healthy.

im like that too .. and im a heavy girl also and thats what they blame it on .. they always blame it on something .. ive been tested, proded and looked in places i'd rather have no one look in , and they came to the conclusion that i am normal and loosing weight will regulate my periods ..

i was like this in highschool also, and they told me it was because i was active in sports .. well im not so active in anything at the moment so i know thats not right .. docs think they know everything

I had that same problem for a few years, I was tested for nearly everything. In the end it came down to emotional problems, have a look back and see if there is anything that could have caused this to happen.

Despite the weight, do you have a fairly regular activity pattern? I keep working on losing weight - I'm about 200 pounds now, despite working for four years to lose it - but I find that whenever I start a new workout or suddenly binge for a few days, my cycle goes wonky, and I'm almost clockwork otherwise.

Try for a few months being really consistent in what you do, weight or no weight, and see if that helps?

also look into aromatherapy oils as certain flower oils can help regualte your period and also make it go no longer than 3 days which is what it should do and also without the cramping though. watch out for rose essential oil though as it also tends to make every guy look exceptionally good when you are ovulating to the point where all you can think about is sex at that time. Rose oil is a good one if you want to get pregnant but there are others out there that help if you just want to bring your cycle under control and make it easier to deal with.

Can I ask of which flower oils you're speaking? I've spoken to my herbalist frequently and have tried a number of different natural products, and I've never had a period last fewer than 6 days (more often it lasts 7-9). I understand that longer periods can come with side effects like anemia and/or can be an indication of a more serious condition; however, I'm not aware of any reputable sources that say longer periods, in and of themselves, are unhealthy.
