I've never used gentian violet, and I keep getting a lot of instructions for treatment of YI on nipples on Google for some reason. Are there any special directions for using gentian violet vaginally? From the various non-vaginal directions off Google, I'm surmising I'd just have to put it on a tampon, then wear it for a few hours a day, right? For how many days/weeks is this treatment supposed to last anyway?

And...this might sound really dumb, but how am I supposed to be able to tell if my vagina is having an allergic reaction to gentian violet? Is it just ... pain, or what?

Also, if you google gentian violet + cancer, you'll find there was a study linking GV to mouth cancer (which I discovered after I'd used it).

Hope this helps clarify about cancer 'link':

"There is also concern that gentian violet may be carcinogenic. This concern is based on a study done in mice that were fed huge amounts of gentian violet every day for either approximately half their natural lives or approximately all their natural lives ("approximately," because their lives did not end naturally). Those that were fed the gentian violet for approximately their entire natural life had a higher incidence of liver cancer than did those that did not get any gentian violet. However, those that were fed the gentian violet for approximately half their natural life did not have an increase in liver cancer. Furthermore, even the mice who had no gentian violet had a high incidence of liver cancer, which suggests they were bred to develop it. Based on this sort of study, I would have no concern about my baby receiving gentian violet."

Well, yes, but the point is, there's a vast difference between ingesting huge amounts daily for a lifetime, and a tiny bit for about a week, so while the cancer mention might be startling, I should think that looking into the data surrounding the study would reassure one that the real risk is virtually nonexistent. Probably quite a lot of things would give you cancer if you consumed very large amounts for years on end, things you wouldn't think twice about consuming on a more realistic basis.

I used the search function in VP's sidebar and got these results"

No personal experience, though I would assume an allergic reaction would be burning, tingling, swelling, redness etc.

If GV feels painful in your vagina, it may be because GV is tinctured in alcohol, which can feel painful against irritated tissue.

As someone who has had a bad reaction to a vaginal treatment you would know if you were having one. Mine was so bad, it felt like intense burn, my vulva was bright red and everything that touched my vulva felt like sandpaper. Ugh I hate thinking about that.
