i put in/take out my nuva ring on fridays..last week i took it out on friday morning at about 7am..and i didnt put my new one in until this past friday at probably around 6pm..is that still considered to be within the 7 days out and still be protected rule? or was i too late and now i'm not protected for 7 days?

Take this as you will, as this is my personal experience. My last re-insert I did something similar. I had sex right around that day. My period arrived Friday evening (which acutally was a bit early for me). I'm going to assume it's ok and safe, but I'm also eager to see what others say.

I would think you would still be at least a good percentage protected because thats not even missing a full extra day...but I don't know for sure, so don't hold me to it...

From everything I've heard, extending the hormone-free week is more risky than shortening it.

That said, in my personal opinion (and I don't have any facts or links or research to substantiate this personal opinion) a difference of less than 12 hours isn't something I would be particularly worried about.

If you're really concerned, you could always use a backup method of birth control for seven days after you first inserted the ring.

I agree with this.

I'm also going to add that my Nuva Ring insert information defines "seven days" as "7 X 24 hours," so technically speaking, going the additional 11 hours may put the user at a very slightly increased risk for pregnancy.

Whether that increase is enough to warrant backup protection depends entirely on the comfort level of the user. Personally, I would, but I also don't mind abstaining (my preferred backup method) from PIV sex for a week. I realize that this is not the case for everyone. ;)

I agree. The increase in risk would probably be slight. Depending on how much risk you're willing to take on, backup protection is a valid option.

And I'm also with you on the using backup protection or abstaining for 7 days. Unfortunately, my current situation would make it easier to abstain than double up on protection right now. Woe is me. :)

As far as I'm aware, shortening it is not risky at all. Is this different on the ring?

Good point. I reread what I wrote and realize that I made it sound like there was some risk in shortening the hormone free week. That's obviously not the case, since some people shorten the hormone free week to the point of not having one in order to skip periods. And we all know that's perfectly all right. :) Thanks for clarifying!

Just checking :) I'm not too familiar with the ring as it isn't available here over the pond.
