okay, i read the birthcontrol faq..

but no answer.

how soon does birth control need to kick in before it will delay your period?

i get mine on the 10th but i'm going to be on the road, and staying with people.. so i really don't want to have it.

am i basically screwed or would it be possible for me to postpone it if i got on birth control sometime before it? how soon?

I think it really depends on your body. You could start BC now, since it's safe to start at any point during your cycle. You might get your period at the same time anyway, you may postpone it by a week or so, you may spot during the first month, or it might work like a dream with no bleeding until the placebo week! I don't think there's any guarantee it would keep you from getting a period during your travels, but it might be worth a shot.

I was in the same situation, but on a canoe trip with a bunch of testosterone-ridden men, which is worse than just being in the car because you have to stop everyone, haul yourself out of a canoe, trot back into the woods a good ways, change whatever it is you're using, bury it, trot back, get back in the canoe and push off.

Pain in my ass. So I skipped to the neighborhood planned parenthood, got the patch a few weeks early and talked to the ladies there. They were very helpful, and told me that I should start using the patch right now for it to work effectively (now being the cycle before the cycle that would come during my canoe trip).

You can push your body all the sudden with birth control, but results may be iffy. There will probably be light bleeding anyway, so bring a few reinforcements. I was on the patch for two months total, I think, and I got my period anyway one of the weeks I was on the patch. Literally right after I got out of the water from canoeing. You can only push your body so far before it tweaks out on you and decides to give you your period anyway.

I tried skipping my period after about a year on BCP (Mircette) and it was the most miserable experience. My period didn't start that week, but it started very lightly the next week and continued throughout the entire month. Freaking terrible.

I'm not sure how long you have to be on it for that sort of thing to actually work like it's supposed to, but I'm sure a lot of it has to do with what type of pill your on (Mircette is low dose- I'm not sure if that affected anything, but it seems plausible) and the way your body reacts to it in the first place.

Personally, my first month on birth control (desogen), I had fairly significant spotting for almost the entire month (minus maybe the first 4-5 days). As everyone else has mentioned, it really depends on your body. Good luck.
