okay so i read this article about a girl who went to the hospital thinking she had a stomach ache but in all actuality, she was nine months pregnant and giving birth;

how does someone not know something like that about their body? is this common?

also, say someone was to get pregnant while on the pill.. would their periods stop or ould the pill continue to make their `artificial period´??

thanx:

there was a girl related to me (3rd or 4th cousin. i went to school with her) who didn't know she was pregnant til she was having it. Now...whether she was telling the truth or not, I don't know. She said she had a period every month, and that she really didn't know. She just thought she was gaining weight around the middle.

haha that's a really distinct way of gaining weight around the middle O_O

she was naturally hefty around the middle anyway, so who's to say if she really knew or not.

Rumor has it that my great grandmother didn't know she was pregnant with my grandma for a long time because they thought she was a tumor. But, that was generations ago... I'd like to think they are better about it now.

But... yeah... I dunno...

Oh, I guess I forgot to mention that she had her period the whole time, and thats why they were confused.

Tumors kick?

Ok, I can buy this one. Back in those days, without the technology and general "squickness" about sexuality, I can buy that she might have thought it was a tumor.

But today?

With the media and general knowledge, I find it highly unlikely for this to happen. Even in the case of an extremely obese woman.
My ex friend Anna is over 400 lbs and SHE knew she was pregnant.

I remember that story, it was on the news in Southern California. I always thought she may had said that for publicity.

it seems like stories i've seen such as those tend to fall into categories of younger women who may be ill-informed about pregnancy or possibly in denial about pregnancy because of parents, community, etc. there are also cases of women who may not gain as much weight or because of a previous medical condition do not have periods on a regular basis.

i personally think in most of these cases that the women are not as aware of their bodies as they should be. or, are more aware than they are letting on.

i think that it's more denial. you can feel the baby moving around at some point.

All I can say is that denial is NOT a big river in Egypt.

Some people convince themselves that they're just getting porky, but they KNOW...they just can't accept it.

Come on...I've had five kids and I can tell you, there's NO mistaking the way a baby feels when it kicks, rolls around, etc. And how do you explain the giant mass in your tummy when you try to roll over on your belly? Or having to pee every 5 minutes?!

A very dear friend of mine (middle class, well educated) was told, all her life, that she could not ever have children. About 2 years ago, or so, her irregular periods became even more irregular (did not stop, just went more crazy). On a whim she took a pg test...negative. OK. (Keep in mind, this friend is morbidly obese and has IBS). Concerned, about the continuing irregularity, she went to the Dr. He did a pg test and it too was negative.
Several months later she got a severe kidney infection (I think) that required hospitalization. Weeks later the same infection returned with horrible cramping and some bleeding. A trip to the ER, and a few hours later an ultra sound, revealed that she was pregnant, but not for long. She had about 1 1/2 hours notice that she was going to have a baby.
This friend had seen doctors, continued and irregular menstrual cycle, and taken 2 pg tests, several Dr visits and a hospital stay did not show she was pregnant.
Her explanations for not knowing, besides the above...weight gain, she is morbidly obese to begin with, a bit more weight was not noticed. She still had bleeding, tho very irregular. As far as feeling the baby move, she has IBS, there is ALWAYS something moving down there.
Never having been pregnant before and being told you never will be pregnant, combined with all the other stuff that happened makes it possible to not know till you are delivering.

Hell, my wife knew as soon as the blastocyst glommed onto the uterine wall. *shrug*

100 years ago, false periods (somewhat common during pregnancy)) could convince a woman on an isolated farm she wasn't pregnant. And some babies are NOT active. I knew a very handsome guy who had a, well, dented nose. His mom said the doctor told her he had been a lazy baby and had laid so long in one position in the womb that his nose grew wrong.

So... are they telling the truth? Some probably are. And some of the young girls, I am sure, are taking any excuse their body hands them to deny the possibility of pregnancy.

Wow......

I just woke up from having a dream.... EXACTLY LIKE THIS.

No I am very very very very freaked out, and think I might go buy myself a pregnancy test.

I dreamed that I didn't even know I was pregnant, for some reason I was in a hospital and then all of a sudden the baby started coming out.

It was a VERY quick and painless delivery. And the Baby was amazing.

My dreams really freak me out because they are very realistic and oftentimes I wake up going "wait... did I dream that or did it really happen."

Now I'm REALLY freaked out after reading this.

Oh, man, someone else who's having crazy dreams! I stayed home from school today because I'm so stressed out, and part of it is that I keep having crazy nightmares.

Their periods would stop in a normal scenario, but I'm sure they could keep getting an "artiificial period" in some cases. Especially if a woman has a double uterus - One uterus will be carrying the baby, but the second will continue to have periods. I have a feeling that some of the above women might have had a double uterus, which would explain having periods while pregnant.

My cousin claims she didn't know til four months or so in and she was a gymnast with crazy irregular periods, but that was still less than halfway through...

Yeah, and one of my old roommate's friends had the double uterus. She was told she could never get pregnant. She had been having unprotected sex for about five years when she did. She was married and they really wanted kids (had been planning on adopting and still may) so it was actually great news, if unexpected, but boy were they surprised.

Both my mother and my mother in law had normal periods right through their pregnancies - and they had six between them! If it hadn't been for the positive pregnancy tests, they would never have known they were pregnant until they either felt the kicking (hubby was a kicker!) or gave birth (my brothers were not movers nor kickers). And both were of normal weight and height.

So it is certainly possible to *not* know you are pregnant...

My sister had a friend who was raped and got pregnant from it, but she didn't realize she'd been raped. She thought being pregnant just "happened." She'd grown up in a very loving but tabooed Catholic family, and she never ever EVER learned about that sort of thing. There's even a Law & Order SVU episode based on it!

Eeek, one of my former co-workers was like that. Firstly, she was freaked out by her period when she got it. She claims when her husband started having sex with her on her wedding night she had no idea what he was doing and thought it was kind of weird but she was like whatever. Then she was pregnant and had no idea how it happened, even though she had been having sex--but for her, there was no connection. Then she was like six months pregnant and still had no idea how the baby would come out. She still thought it would come out her bellybutton or something like some five year olds think. When the doctor told her she was shocked. It is so freaky her parents told her *nothing*. This was like thirty years ago in a conservative community, but still! This is why we need sex ed in school!

Is that the episode with the girl with down syndrome and the man that raped her was calling it 'exercise'?

No, that's a different episode. I've seen both.

I've heard of a lot of people like that. I personally don't understand it either. Most babies kick while their in you at some point..and if something kicked in me I'd FREAK OUT and be like 'WHAT IS IN ME?!' But I guess if you are one of those people who don't gain weight when they're pregnant or gain very few pounds and you still are getting your period...I can see how maybe you might not notice? That would really be one hell of a story though.

I think that if one hasn't had many periods and knows little about her body, then a secret pregnancy may be believable. But when it's an older woman, I generally don't buy it. I've been pregnant twice and there are bits that just can't be anything else. Okay, someone who's never been pregnant before and doesn't think she's pregnant wouldn't necessarily know what was going on, but she would have to know that *something* was going on, months before labor began.

In other words, some people are remarkably good at lying to themselves.
