Alright, I looked through the archive and looked for the answer to this and didn't see it.

This summer I have had three ear infections. I have my third one now. And each time they have given me a form of amoxicilin. Each time I have gotten a yeast infection. This time I thought I'd be smart and pre-emptive. So I bought a bunch of cranberry juice, yogurt, and those Azo yeast tablets. And I've been taking the tablets as directed. I started the antibiotics yesterday. And sure enough, I've got that itching sensation.

I've already bought the monistat. So, my question is... do I use it tonight, or wait until the end of my antibiotics in ten days? If I use it tonight, will I just get another YI?

Thanks a lot.

Hmm. You can try the garlic thing overnight a few times until you are done with the antibiotics, then use the monistat if it hasn't gone away.

I don't know the specifics offhand. I know they're in the memories, though.

I don't know much about Yeast Infections, but I know an excellent remedy for ear infections. Sweet Oil. Simply either washing the ear out with it, or soaking a cotton ball with it and leaving it in your ear (prefered). I used to get a lot of ear infections, and it wworks much much faster than any prescription, and is much cheaper.

Are you getting low-sugar cranberry juice? Cranberry juice is for UTIs, not YIs, so it's probably not doing anything to help prevent YI and it's got so much sugar in it (to counter the natural tartness of cranberries) that, unless you're getting the low-sugar variety, it's just feeding the yeast.

There's no reason not to start the Monistat now, it'll probably work better to curb the yeast growth from the get-go. What sort of yogurt are you eating - does it specifically list live culture L. acidophilus as an ingredient?

Nope. Yoplait is full of sugar and not much in the way of probiotics. Look for Stonyfield Farm or other organic yogurt.

It's crazy how much name brands charge for antifungals, but you may be able to find store-brand miconazole for less (just check labels to make sure it's for use in the vagina - a topical cream may not feel so nice in there!)

Honestly, I've never tried the garlic, but you're right, it's a fraction of the cost and I know a lot of women here swear by it. It's not going to hurt, at the very least.

Oh, and gentian violet works REALLY well on yeast. Since it's an alcohol-based tincture, it can sting a bit when it's applied, but I've never let that stop me :D

When you buy yogurt, look for something that says "live, active cultures" or "LAC" If it doesn't say that, it might not be doing anything for you. Low sugar is preferable.

Acidophilus pills help, too, but some better than others, as someone else said. Unfortunately, they can be expensive, too.

I second the diflucan suggestion, too. You may be able to call your doc, tell him your symptoms, and ask him/her to call in a prescription of it for you.

I can't imagine waiting to treat a yeast infection. I say do it now. And buy another box of (generic-brand; much cheaper) antifungal vag cream to have around just in case it comes back.

You have my sympathy. I've been there, a lot.

Anytime I get the slightest sensation of a yeast infection, I use OTC treatments. This keeps it from being full-blown. You may have to use the 7 day treatment just to be sure to knock it out. The longer you wait, the worse and more uncomfortable the infection may get. As the above poster suggests, I also request a prescription for Diflucan each time I get a antibiotics prescription. And taking acidophilous supplements and garlic supplements as well. The garlic remedy is putting a clove of garlic in your vagina. Some say to wrap it in gauze, but I just put it up there. It knocked out a yeast infection that would not go away even after two rounds of OTC treatments. I scheduled an appt. with my gyno. but after the garlic it was gone.

I also start OTC treatment as soon as feel it coming on and i am still on the antibiotic, but also have to do treatment again after meds are all finished up.
I just read recently that cinnamon and basil make great duche for YI, and next time i feel one coming on, i am going to try it.
here it is if anyone else want to try it;
boil 8-10 cinnamon sticks in 4cups of water, let simmer for 5 mins, and steep for 45 mins, when cooled, put in duche container. it doesnt say for how many days, so would assume til the itch goes away.
