so, i'm a little confused.
if you know you've ovulated, be it through ovulation pain or whatever else, then if you wait a couple more days, are you then unfertile (read: safe to have unprotected sex) at least until your period arrives, maybe even during your period, as long as you give it around a week before you're next due to ovulate?

in other words, how long does it take for the egg to go 'too far' to become fertalised?

edit: i am not going to have unprotected sex, i'm just curious. i know that sperm can live for five days or so, but even giving a week's leeway BEFORE ovulation, and several days AFTER ovulation, that still leaves a lot of potentially 'safe' days in a 29 day cycle (my average is 29).

1. You can never be sure when you ovulate unless you use FAM.
2. Sperm can live inside of you for 3 days. So if you have sex during an "unfertile period", an egg may still be fertlized.

I remember from health class there is only a three day period when you aren't fertile, and that's on a perfect 28-day cycle.

Sperm can live inside of you for more like 5 days. and actually, that
"3 days when you're not fertile" thing is incorrect as well.

It would be great if you could back up your corrections with some resources :)

Yes, that's right. Sperm hang out for about 6 days in your body. So if you know exactly when you ovulate, you can plan around it. There are different ways to monitor your fertility. I'd suggest poking around the archives and the vaginapagina website looking for information about FAM. It's pretty interesting and can be an effective method of birth control if you're willing to be diligent about it and actually track your fertility, not just assume your schedule's always regular.

nuvaring is hormonal just like the pill- so if you're afraid of side effects of the pill, i would think that you would be afraid of the ring as well.

I want the ring too! it's lower hormone dose and isn't supposed to have as many side effects. I'm in the UK so I can't get either...will switch when I get back to Canada. BCP is fine for me...actually I really like what it does for me, but I suck suck suck at taking it when I'm supposed to.

I think combining FAM and condoms is a great idea, btw. A good way to be very very safe without hormones.

so....say I had unprotected sex on a thursday, then I got my period on saturday but only bled for one day....is it possible I may be pregnant?

If the period was much much shorter than your average period, it might be cause for concern, because it could possibly just be implantation bleeding. Personally, I'd take a pregnancy test.

is there a rule about how long to wait after the unprotected sex before taking a pregnancy test?

found this in the archives, it might help: Early-pregnancy tests (http://www.livejournal.com/community/vaginapagina/3495815.html)

Do you know when you were due for your period? Like, was this one-day thing on time for when your period should be? If not, wait until you're supposed to get your period, and if it doesn't come, take a test. If you're not sure, buy a box of two (they're usually packaged in twos anyway) and take one now. If it's negative, wait a few weeks and if a normal period doesn't come, take the second.

I would guess if it was on time for a period, you're okay. Can't hurt to be sure though!

Also, it would be reaaaally soon for it to be implatation bleeding. If she only had unprotected sex on thursday, I don't think an hypothetic egg could be implanting on Saturday already. Doesn't it take at least a week or so for the egg to travel to the uterus and implant?
