1. You can never be sure when you ovulate unless you use FAM. 2. Sperm can live inside of you for 3 days. So if you have sex during an "unfertile period", an egg may still be fertlized.
I remember from health class there is only a three day period when you aren't fertile, and that's on a perfect 28-day cycle.
