Should I be worried if my cycle used to be a very regular 28-29 day cycle, but all of the sudden it changed to be a 36 day cycle for the last 3 months? I haven't started or stopped any hormonal birth control. I'm 25 years old. I wanted to start taking BCP this month, but now I'm worried that if I do I won't be able to observe whether my cycle is doing anything worrisome?

I am not an expert, but something similar has happened to me, especially when there have been some major shifts/changes in my life. Of course, cycles can change for a lot of reasons, but lifestyle changes can definitely factor into that!

For a while, I found that my cycle would not only be about the same amount of days every month, but would actually start on the same day every month. Then, out of the blue, it was a week later, which, of course, made me anxious. Then, it was regular again. I, too, am not on any hormonal birth control, so this was really odd for me. I suppose I don't have any definite answers, but you aren't alone. It happens to me from time to time as well. :)

I do know that because most female's fertility peaks between the ages of 22 and 26, you may find changes in your cycle that happen in that time period. I'm not actually sure if the "fertility peak" is the reason why, but i've read on here before that around age 26 marks a change and you may find differences

You won't have a cycle when you're on HBC. The hormones basically override everything your body would normally do, meaning that you won't ovulate or any of the things that would usually be a part of your cycle.

The bleed a lot of pill packs have each month is actually a 'withdrawal bleed' from lack of hormones and not a true period at all.

It's pretty normal for cycles to change in length 'just because'. I used to have a 30+ day cycle and now I've gone back to 27/28. Unless there's anything else unusual going on, like more painful periods or headaches or anything else that bothers you, there's no reason why you shouldn't start on the pill. You could probably mention this to your prescribing doctor if its still something you're concerned about.
