i'm kind of full of a few questions that i need some help with. i know i should talk to my doctor about it, but she's not really available at this hour nor till midweek, so i'm going to the next best source (you guys). <3.

i was told that i tested positive for strep, and was given some amoxicilian to treat it. upon reading up on strep and asking around, i was told that it usually is not treated unless you're pregnant & about to have a baby. -- which i'm not. -- so why am i being treated for it? i haven't been taking the antibiotics regularly (life is hectic and unscheduled at the moment) and i'm not really wanting to treat the strep if i don't have to, because i heard it wasn't harmfull and was generally left untreated.

i was also told that i had a yeast infection. i had experienced mild itching ocassionally, but nothing big. i took a diflucan. two antibiotic pills were taken the same day after the diflucan, no more since. that was last monday. i was told to take the second diflucan i was prescribed on the following monday (oct 27). what my question is, if i took a diflucan, why am i still having some itching once in a while? it's not a constant thing, but it does itch and burn when i sit on my gina wrong (as it has with past yeastiebeasties), and my gina has a stronger smell to her. it's not a bad odor, for real, it's just like my 'scent' is stronger or something. it's not bothersome to my fiance, and i don't mind it, it's just a bit stronger than usual so i don't know if it's related to the yeast or not. in any case, why am i still experiencing symptoms after taking a diflucan? ps; i have no stds or other infections. thank you.

any help would be great.
love,
kylie.

Is this strep throat or some other form of strep? Strep throat is contagious until you’ve been on antibiotics for a certain period of time (is it 24 hours?). This is from a doctor who was testing me for strep throat once (I didn’t have it) so I didn’t need the antibiotics. If you’ve got symptoms of strep throat, it usually will become a nasty fever-thing and doesn’t clear up without antibiotics. Maybe you’ve got a different strep (not strep throat?) or it’s only untreated in people who aren’t showing symptoms? This is just a guess on my part.

Since you’ve started the antibiotics, you need to finish them (even if you find out that treating strep this way was “unnecessary”. If you didn’t, you could end up contributing to the “antibiotic resistance” of a strand of strep and get sick again (probably sicker than the first time) or spread it to someone else.

Diflucan pills take a little while to take full effect. My doctor gave me one pill (I wasn’t on antibiotics of any variety) and told me not to expect everything to clear up for a few days. She told me that the pill would treat the yeast infection but not the symptoms so I should get some over the counter creams if I wanted some relief from pain/itching/burning until the pill had a chance to clear everything up.

Antibiotics tend to “cause” yeast infections, and you’re still taking the antibiotics. The first diflucin pill would probably treat it, but if you’re still on antibiotics, the antibiotics would probably bring it back. I would guess that the second diflucin pill would be to stop any resistant yeasties from grabbing a deep strong hold after your continued antibiotics.
