i'm kind of full of a few questions that i need some help with. i know i should talk to my doctor about it, but she's not really available at this hour nor till midweek, so i'm going to the next best source (you guys). <3.

i was told that i tested positive for strep, and was given some amoxicilian to treat it. upon reading up on strep and asking around, i was told that it usually is not treated unless you're pregnant & about to have a baby. -- which i'm not. -- so why am i being treated for it? i haven't been taking the antibiotics regularly (life is hectic and unscheduled at the moment) and i'm not really wanting to treat the strep if i don't have to, because i heard it wasn't harmfull and was generally left untreated.

i was also told that i had a yeast infection. i had experienced mild itching ocassionally, but nothing big. i took a diflucan. two antibiotic pills were taken the same day after the diflucan, no more since. that was last monday. i was told to take the second diflucan i was prescribed on the following monday (oct 27). what my question is, if i took a diflucan, why am i still having some itching once in a while? it's not a constant thing, but it does itch and burn when i sit on my gina wrong (as it has with past yeastiebeasties), and my gina has a stronger smell to her. it's not a bad odor, for real, it's just like my 'scent' is stronger or something. it's not bothersome to my fiance, and i don't mind it, it's just a bit stronger than usual so i don't know if it's related to the yeast or not. in any case, why am i still experiencing symptoms after taking a diflucan? ps; i have no stds or other infections. thank you.

any help would be great.
love,
kylie.

Haha, I'm so dealing with strep/yeastie/UTI right now and it's hellish. Gotta take antibiotics for the UTI and the strep. They aggravate my yeast infection. It sucks.

Yes, a lot of the time strep goes untreated. I'm not sure why. I've had it like four times. Bleh.

Okay, I'm not much help but I do sympathize.

awhile ago I took diflucan, and after sitting in class for 3 hours the day after taking it (legs crossed) I went to the bathroom & noticed a very strong yeastie smell. Thing is, I didn't hardly have any smell before I took it, so I don't know if the diflucan just aggrivated it or just caused it to flush out all the gunk.

Another interesting thing...it reminded me of the way I used to smell when I was a young teen sometimes...I probably had yeast infections back then that I wasn't even aware of!

Taking antibiotics sporadically is about the worst thing you can do for an infection, because it doesn't kill the bacteria -- it just makes them resistant to the antibiotic, which means when you want to get rid of them you're not able to. Since you've already started taking the antibiotics, you need to finish them, whether the infection is usually left untreated or not, and you need to finish them according to the instructions you were given for taking them.

Lots of hospitals are having problems with antibiotic-resistant staph infections. This is a very real danger.

exactly! i should have read your post before i made my own. have you ever read herbal antibiotics? it talks about how quickly bacteria becomes resistant to antibiotics, and herbal alternatives that work better.

That's about the worst thing to do, since it exposes all the bacteria to the antibiotic and kills almost none of them.

I'm not saying it needs to be treated; I'm saying that since you started treating it, you need to continue.

Perhaps your doctor was treating it because you asked her to take care of as much as possible.

When there are no symptoms it is common not to treat strep. If you were having any, then it needs to be treated. It is really, really important to take your antibiotics as prescribed. Taking them sporadically or missing a lot of pills leads to antibiotic-resistant strains. It can take Diflucan up to 7 days to work. If you are still experiencing itching or irritation 7 days after the second pill, you will need to see your doctor again. Being on antibiotics and having a yeast infection can both change the smell of your vaginal secretions.

If you have symptoms, strep is like a really bad sore throat (you can get a strep infection elsewhere - but that's the usual culprit) that feels really raw and just won't go away.

Since this wasn't the case for you, you might want to call your health care provider and ask if it is really neccessary to be on antibiotics.

If you're still plauged by the yeasties after your second dose, a call to your health care provider would probably do the trick - you'd likely be advised to use an over the counter cream or suppository treatment.

Is this strep throat or some other form of strep? Strep throat is contagious until you’ve been on antibiotics for a certain period of time (is it 24 hours?). This is from a doctor who was testing me for strep throat once (I didn’t have it) so I didn’t need the antibiotics. If you’ve got symptoms of strep throat, it usually will become a nasty fever-thing and doesn’t clear up without antibiotics. Maybe you’ve got a different strep (not strep throat?) or it’s only untreated in people who aren’t showing symptoms? This is just a guess on my part.

Since you’ve started the antibiotics, you need to finish them (even if you find out that treating strep this way was “unnecessary”. If you didn’t, you could end up contributing to the “antibiotic resistance” of a strand of strep and get sick again (probably sicker than the first time) or spread it to someone else.

Diflucan pills take a little while to take full effect. My doctor gave me one pill (I wasn’t on antibiotics of any variety) and told me not to expect everything to clear up for a few days. She told me that the pill would treat the yeast infection but not the symptoms so I should get some over the counter creams if I wanted some relief from pain/itching/burning until the pill had a chance to clear everything up.

Antibiotics tend to “cause” yeast infections, and you’re still taking the antibiotics. The first diflucin pill would probably treat it, but if you’re still on antibiotics, the antibiotics would probably bring it back. I would guess that the second diflucin pill would be to stop any resistant yeasties from grabbing a deep strong hold after your continued antibiotics.

doctors love to prescribe antibiotics. maybe he thought he'd kill it just as well. i think antibiotics are some of the worst medications out there. but if you're going to take them, take them for as long as the prescription says to. antibiotics kill most of your good healthy bacteria, too. if you only take antibiotics until you feel better, most of the pathogenic bacteria have been killed, but theare are still small numbers of them that can reproduce again into the billions if you stop the antibiotics. those new bacteria are growing because the first bit of exposure to antibiotics already taught them to be resistant. there are lots of studies on this, if you're interested.

in any case, make sure if you take antibiotics to replentish your body with good bacteria. you can get acidophalous or other flora at any health food store. it's so important!

The strep you've got is Group B Strep. Most (but not all) non-pregnant women with Group B Strep have no signs or symptoms and don't need to be treated. SOME women do experience symptoms and require treatment though. For those that it does affect, it can cause mild symptoms like UTIs, but more severe cases can cause bloodstream infections, pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and bone and joint infections (it's then called Group B Strep Disease). Although I doubt that you have a serious case of strep, it could be possible that you have mild symptoms. Have you had any UTIs lately? If so, it might be better for you to actually take the antibiotics. Other than that though, you should be ok.

I have a similiar problem. I've had a yeast infection that took forever to go away, and now that it is, I've still had some itching. My doctor explained it to me as like with a mosquito bite, once you itch and possibly break some skin, it takes that much longer. So she prescribed a steriod cream that helps with healing and itching. If its that bothersome to you, you might want to go back to your doctor and discuss it. It's such a pain!....I understand. Good luck.
