Hi everyone. I'm hoping I get get some good feedback here.

I am 25 and have only ever used hormonal birth control once for about 5 months. I was on the NuvaRing and had some side effects with it (horrible breast tenderness, big sore pimples on my forehead and mood swings).

A few years have passed and my boyfriend and I have been just relying on condoms. Condoms irritate me so I've been thinking about trying BC again.

I am hesitant to do a oral pill because I can be forgetful about taking medicine. My gyn mentioned the patch or the shot. I have decided the shot isn't something I want to do. The patch seemed like an okay idea but I've read it's a very high dose of hormones. Is this true? Wouldn't that lead to more side effects?

What are some good low hormone options (even if it's pills)?

Have you looked into getting an IUD? Paraguard is made of copper and is hormone-free.

OMG I am in love with your icon!

On a more productive note, there are lots of non-hormonal options besides condoms (though I'm quite partial to Paragard myself): http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=Non-Hormonal_Birth_Control. If none of those appeal to you, the lowest-dose hormonal contraceptives are the hormonal IUD (Mirena) and the implant (Implanon). Good luck!

I was on the patch (well, sort of...I lasted one day because it itched so damn bad I tore it off). Anyways, I did some research before I got it and here is basically the deal with the higher hormones:

The patch basically keeps a steady dose of hormones in your body. The Pill puts the whole amount of hormone in your body at one time, then gradually lessens until you take the next pill. Then the hormone levels spike up again. The highest spike in the hormone levels with the pill is higher than ANY level the patch will give you. Also, the Patch has higher hormone levels than the lower levels of the Pill. The patch just keeps the hormone levels constant instead of spiking up and down.

It's kinda hard to explain in words, but if you download this PDF from Ortho Evra.com, it has charts that explain it a lot better:
