[identity profile] isolt.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] vaginapagina
So, I got my nose pierced this past weekend. What, you are wondering, does this have to do with vaginas? Well, I'll tell you: ever since getting my nose piercing, I've realized that unless I decide to go for my nipples or my clit, I don't think I could possibly pierce anything that could hurt more than my nose (and even that honestly wasn't so bad, and I'm a wuss). So I've been bouncing around the idea of getting my labia pierced, mostly as an idle musing, but also as something I might want to do sometime down the road (when both my pocketbook and my nose have recovered).

My question is this: other than the normal health risks associated with piercing (possible infection, equipment that wasn't properly sterilized, lack of skill on the part of the piercer, etc), would there be any extra health risks specifically associated with getting my labia pierced? Would I be able to have sex during the initial healing period? If any of you lovely ladies in here are pierced, can you tell me about your experiences? Do they catch on things? (I hear that belly button piercings do that *a lot*, actually, and I can imagine it would be annoying if they always caught on my panties).

Thanks :)

Sex during the initial healing period with a genital piercing wouldn't be a good idea. Much like "open-mouthed kissing" (as they phrase it on the aftercare sheet, hehe) after a tongue piercing -- you're introducing bacteria to the area that doesn't need to be there. Think of it like a healing wound. :)

::grins:: That would depend on what specifically you got pierced and your, ahh, method of stimulation, I guess.
I would assume that as long as it's not irritating the piercing any more than it would if you were cleaning it, and you're not doing anything that would make it get non-you germs on it, and you've washed your hands... it would be okay.
I'm not a piercer, though. ;) And any good piercing place would give you an aftercare sheet detailing exactly what you can and can't do for X amount of time after you get the piercing, and will tell you that you can always call if you have questions. :)

My navel piercing got infected A LOT - specifically, every time I wore pantyhose. I think the moisture and heat trapped around my piercing made it a breeding ground for infection. I would have to think a pair of jeans would have the same effect on a genital piercing.

just fyi, navel piercings are some of the HARDEST piercings to heal, so it's not a good idea to base your assumptions on them. genital piercings heal fairly quickly and easily (if you take decent care of them) because of the high blood flow down there.

more info here (http://www.bmezine.com), under the piercing experiances section.

good luck. :)

they're actually very different. your clit hood is a mucus membrane, and they heal much differently than regular skin.

oh. right. i knew that. *laugh* i was thinking about getting MY clit hood done. yes, i think that labia are basically just regular skin.

I'd recommend asking the question on one of the body modification lj communities, or showing them this link, to see if any of them has advice/expierence.

kickass, thanks - I'd run off to make dinner and figured if links were needed, I could do that when food was feasted on :)

*grins* I'm dying to get my tongue pierced. Initially, it was like "tongue or somewhere down there?". I decided tongue. I have one nipple pierced. I've never had any healing problems or any infections at all and I've had the piercing for like 3 years now.

This wasn't very helpful but just thought I'd share. :)

You'll probably know to do this anyway, but it's the one warning I didn't heed, so...
If you get your tongue pierced... whether they emphasize it a lot or not, they are very serious about keeping ice and other very cold things in your mouth, almost all the time.
I didn't listen because they didn't tell me exactly how important it was, so my tongue swelled up so badly that I could barely fit anything in my mouth (much less chew without biting my already very painful tongue), and had to go back to the piercer and get the longest barbell known to man put in my mouth to accommodate the swelling.
Long personal anecdote over. Ice is good. Slushies are good. Extremely swollen tongues are very, very bad.

Wow ... thank you for telling me that! Not that being told to eat ice cream and slurpees all the time will be a problem. LOL! I am very worried about swelling in regards to not being able to talk. One of my classes is on technical speeches ... thus, it's all oral! I may have to wait until may. *pouts*

my tongue never swelled. it was just sore. the initial piercing didn't even hurt. it was like a tiny pinch.

i did everything they told me NOT to do, too (open mouth kissing, smoking, etc). I just used listerine after just about everything. (make sure you use it after eating, smoking, putting anything in your mouth heh). My tongue piercing experience was quite good :) I've had it for 3 years and can't imagine ever taking it out!

my eyebrow on the other hand was infected for awhile after I got it done. I cleaned it a lot but it just didn't seem to like me. It finally got better. I can't even wear earrings without having them get infected, hot, and itchy, so im assuming its the same kind of skin there or whatever. The only time it bothers me now is when I take it out and put it back in frequently. Besides that, i barely know its there. I've had that done for 2 years :)

Yah...

When I got my tongue done, I was totally aware of it too- I played with it ALL the time, and I'm sure I drove all those around me totally crazy. But now I totally forget it's even there. If you wear a short barbell, you won't really notice it. Sometimes if I feel like playing with it, I'll put in a longer one, but usually I just keep the short one in...

I want to get contacts but I'm not sure if I can handle putting things in my eyes. I'm a wuss about eye drops!

It's amazing how much little body parts function. We take it all for granted.

Yeah I've had a septum piercing (bull ring) for about a year now. I heard that the nose is actually one of the more "painful' areas to pierce. However, I think it heals more quickly than other places. Good luck, let us know how it turns out! :-)
