quick (and not at all urgent) question

So, I got my nose pierced this past weekend. What, you are wondering, does this have to do with vaginas? Well, I'll tell you: ever since getting my nose piercing, I've realized that unless I decide to go for my nipples or my clit, I don't think I could possibly pierce anything that could hurt more than my nose (and even that honestly wasn't so bad, and I'm a wuss). So I've been bouncing around the idea of getting my labia pierced, mostly as an idle musing, but also as something I might want to do sometime down the road (when both my pocketbook and my nose have recovered).
My question is this: other than the normal health risks associated with piercing (possible infection, equipment that wasn't properly sterilized, lack of skill on the part of the piercer, etc), would there be any extra health risks specifically associated with getting my labia pierced? Would I be able to have sex during the initial healing period? If any of you lovely ladies in here are pierced, can you tell me about your experiences? Do they catch on things? (I hear that belly button piercings do that *a lot*, actually, and I can imagine it would be annoying if they always caught on my panties).
Thanks :)

Date: 2002-03-05 04:56 pm (UTC)I would assume that as long as it's not irritating the piercing any more than it would if you were cleaning it, and you're not doing anything that would make it get non-you germs on it, and you've washed your hands... it would be okay.
I'm not a piercer, though. ;) And any good piercing place would give you an aftercare sheet detailing exactly what you can and can't do for X amount of time after you get the piercing, and will tell you that you can always call if you have questions. :)

Date: 2002-03-05 06:17 pm (UTC)for some reason I was actually basing my assumptions on the ear piercings I have (I've pierced them at 3 points in my life). The amount and thickness of skin in both places seems similar.

Date: 2002-03-05 05:38 pm (UTC)If you get your tongue pierced... whether they emphasize it a lot or not, they are very serious about keeping ice and other very cold things in your mouth, almost all the time.
I didn't listen because they didn't tell me exactly how important it was, so my tongue swelled up so badly that I could barely fit anything in my mouth (much less chew without biting my already very painful tongue), and had to go back to the piercer and get the longest barbell known to man put in my mouth to accommodate the swelling.
Long personal anecdote over. Ice is good. Slushies are good. Extremely swollen tongues are very, very bad.

Date: 2002-03-06 06:48 am (UTC)i did everything they told me NOT to do, too (open mouth kissing, smoking, etc). I just used listerine after just about everything. (make sure you use it after eating, smoking, putting anything in your mouth heh). My tongue piercing experience was quite good :) I've had it for 3 years and can't imagine ever taking it out!
my eyebrow on the other hand was infected for awhile after I got it done. I cleaned it a lot but it just didn't seem to like me. It finally got better. I can't even wear earrings without having them get infected, hot, and itchy, so im assuming its the same kind of skin there or whatever. The only time it bothers me now is when I take it out and put it back in frequently. Besides that, i barely know its there. I've had that done for 2 years :)

Date: 2002-03-05 06:22 pm (UTC)Right now I'm *really* aware of my nose. I had no idea it moved so much. And when I first got contacts, I was *really* aware of my eyes for the longest time....
Yah...

More on-topic for this community, when I got my period for the first few times, I was *so* aware of my cunt. Even now, getting my period tends to make me more aware of it. :)
