Generally, it's believed that sperm stays alive for 5-7 days at most. There is one, count her, one researcher who believes that sperm can stay alive longer by cuddling up with fallopian tube cells, and has managed to keep sperm alive in the lab for something like 11 days.

If you haven't had sex during your normal placebo week, you're probably fine. Just start taking your active pills as soon as you can.

(And, just so's you know -- not everyone on VP is a girl: some have the mind, but not the factory-installed equipment, and some have the equipment but would like a higher-tech-than-we-have after-market adjustment, if you see what I mean. O:> )

Is your pill tri-phasic (three different levels of hormones before the placebo week)? If so, I would suggest just continuing with your current week, then moving on to the one you missed, before finishing up with the third week. It won't compromise your protection, though your hormones may be a little wacky and you may have some spotting.

If it's monophasic (one level of hormones and a placebo week), I suggest continuing with the pack but using backup protection for a week.

why would you need to use backup if it's monophasic? all the pills are the exact same.
I think you have it backwords...

Duh! You're right, my bad, I can't believe I didn't catch that. If it's monophasic, the order doesn't matter at all, so no backup needed.

That said, I also don't think she'd need backup on a triphasic because she's still taking hormones, and they're all equally effective against pregnancy, they're just not in the same order as usual.

I'm assuming you're on a triphasic pill? As in, a different level of hormones per week?

If so and you took the wrong active pill (one with hormones in it), just go back to the first week starting tomorrow, and continue through as normal. You will not need back-up protection.

If you took a placebo pill (one without hormones), it's probably not a big deal -- start your active pills tomorrow and use back-up for a week if you want to be extra careful.

And as [livejournal.com profile] archangelbeth mentioned, sperm doesn't stay in you for two weeks. Most often, it can survive around 3-5 days, with some experts saying an absolute maximum of seven, and that would be pretty rare.
