Ok.. here's my deal.
I've been on Yaz for about three years now - but I recently quit a job and started another one - therefore losing my medical coverage.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to get three months worth of Yaz without paying almost 200 per box because I don't have a prescription anymore?

thanks in advance!

Planned Parenthood. The last time I went, they gave me 3 months of nuvaring and an EC just in case, for $80 total. And since Nuvaring is generally more expensive than the pill, I imagine it would be a bit cheaper.

depends on the planned parenthood and how much funding they get.

the one i went to in my hometown, i fell into the "free" sector of their scale.

the one in the town i live in now, has NO free section on their scale. you pay a minimum of 20%. i barely cleared poverty level last year by my taxes, and I was at the 95% level with my planned parenthood. it took some extremely creative budgeting to be able to afford it.

Sometimes your health care praticioner has a bunch of "samples" that they can dole out when folks need them, so I would start by asking the person that wrote you the prescription. Also they may know of low cost or free options in your area.

If that fails I'd try calling planned parenthood, then you can try asking at your local health department, (they may again know of low cost options in your area).

Just FYI, when I was on yaz, I didn't have any health insurance and the perscription at walgreesn was only 45 dollars.

$200 a box? are you sure?

i'm on yaz right now and don't have health insurance and even when I did, birth control was not covered. It's around $55 a box.

yeah, two hundy sounds like an awful lot. I'd double check that price before you freak. And I may be wrong, but I recall hearing that sometimes insurance companies get charged more than uninsured patients, so the fact that the price on your statement or whatever is 200 doesn't necessarily imply that you will have to pay 200. Also try calling around to different pharmacies - I think the prices vary.

You don't have a prescription? Are you sure? Are you in the US? Because you should not be able to get HBC without a prescription if you are - its a prescription only drug. I'd be wary of purchasing it anywhere that doesn't require you to have a prescription.

My advice, then, would to be to get on down to planned parenthood or your local health clinic, get yourself a prescription, and then see what the cost is like.

I would really advise you not to order from those websites. You don't know whether the pills have been properly stored, etc. and they may not be any good.

It'd be a lot cheaper just to go get a prescription and then pay the regular pharmacy price, I'd think.

Oh, yeah. I've never done that, but everything I hear is that if you want coverage for every day types of things like birth control, getting individual insurance is very very expensive. :( Expensive like, you're better off paying out of pocket. I don't really know though.

Dose lack of insurance mean that you also have no way to see a doctor to GET a prescription?

I don't know if this sounds like a really stupid idea, but are you close to the canadian boarder? i know that i walk in appointment with a doctor, sans canadian health insurance, means a cost of less then 100 dollars (i THINK, that's what a friend of mine from britain told me, and he's sans health insurance). And with a perscription, you can fill it for alot cheaper then 200 bucks a box at a canadian pharmacy! i get my yasmin for 25 bucks a box.

You could call your doctor, explain the situation, and ask them to extend the prescription without an appointment. I know my doctor will do things like that for me with just a phone call.

Could you ask your gyno for samples? If they don't have them, maybe ask for a prescription for the generic version of Yasmin. It's similar to Yaz, just with a slightly higher amount of estrogen, but the important thing is that it comes in a generic (can't remember what the name is though). Once your new insurance kicks in, you could either go back to Yaz or stay on that generic pill if you like it.

Of course, all of this requires a doctor's appointment, which sucks in itself because of your insurance situation. Don't you just love the US health care system?

If you still have a regular health care provider -- someone who's seen you in the past 12 months, usually -- it might be worth calling to see if they'll write a prescription without you coming in for a visit. I know that my gynecological NP, the person who prescribed by HBC for me initially, had no problem doing this. If it's a provider who hasn't seen you within the past year or who wasn't the one to prescribe the Yaz initially, then that might be a not-so-helpful suggestion.

Another option besides PP might be to check out your county health department if you have one. It's not a guarantee, but they're among some of the more likely places to have a "no one will be turned away for inability to pay" policy.
