Alcohol and Sex

Sorry if this isn't appropriate for this community. It's the only one I am a member of and trust for this sort of advice.

This is just something I've been curious about for a while.

If I drink (not necessarily to the point of drunkenness, but usually slightly past tipsy), I often find that my sex drive almost disappears. Is this common? It seems strange to me, and none of my friends have mentioned this as a problem for them.

It's not a problem for me, because it rarely works out quite right for the boy when we've been drinking anyhow, which is something that I knew of and expected in men.. but is it normal for women as well?

I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas what could cause it? I'm just sort of curious about the concept of a libido in general and why it can be such a finicky thing.

Alcohol is a depressant, so it doesn't seem odd to me that it would nullify your sex drive.

Yeah, the concept makes sense to me as well, but when I asked friends about it, they seemed to think it was bizarre that I didn't immediately want to take my clothes off after I'd had a few drinks. I guess maybe it has to do with the fact that I am in a committed relationship, in which I do not need my inhibitions lowered to be comfortable being intimate with my boyfriend, whereas most of them only have experience mixing alcohol with one-night-stand type situations that they often need lowered inhibitions to feel comfortable about.

The thing about alcohol is --and I learned this in Psych Class! Yay-- when you drink it, you will act how you expect yourself to act, generally speaking. Whether you expect to be noisy, angry, amorous, or even horny, these expectations become a self-fulfilling prophecy. So you see, it's very mental. I wouldn't say there is anything wrong with your finicky libido.

after a couple drinks for me, I'm ready and raring to hop in bed with The Boy, but after that-I could care less if he wants to fool around.

Alcohol always increases my sex drive until the point of drinking when I'm semi-comatose/vomiting, when it disappears.
Or that could just be because I'm a teenager.

Hmm. Well, I'm a teenager as well. I'll be 19 in a month, but I'm pretty sure that still qualifies me, hehe. I'm not sure. I'm liking the theory that maybe we act how we expect to act when we're drunk? Or maybe it's a combination of things. I'm really not sure.. I guess I'll stick with the old standard and conclude that everyone's just different.

I'm 22, and drinking still makes me horny... depends on the situation of course, but usually I'm more inclined to be sexual when drunk.

Hehe, I'm 21, and me too. I wouldn't say I'm more inclined to be sexual when drunk - I'm generally fairly horny on a pretty regular basis - but I think I'm a tad more uninhibited, more likely to start making out on the dance floor than I would be if I were sober.

That's interesting.... well, there's that famous quote from Shakespeare-- "It provokes the desire but takes away the performance." So true.... although, it does make the guys last longer at least, it seems. I once hooked up with a guy when we'd both had about 8 drinks and we had sex for about 2 hours. It was great...

As for me, when I'm tipsy, I'm almost always more inclined to feel horny, though not necessarily get wet as easily. I think in general I have a medium-low sex drive, so I guess if I drink, it has nowhere to go but up.

what xzarakizraiia said made most sense to me. even though i don't need alcohol to be comfortable with my boyfriend sexually, alcohol definitely reduces my inhibitions. but more than one or two drink (i'm really a lightweight when it comes to drinking, kind of embarrassing but hey, atleast i'm cheap) makes me not care about sex, i would rather cuddle. but when i do have sex if i've been drinking, it is completely impossible for me to orgasm..probably because i'm not that into it in the first place haha.

Alcohol makes it harder for me to orgasm, drier, and generally makes it less fun for me. However, a couple drinks turns my partner into a total animal (and if those drinks are whiskey, I'm in for a 6-hour marathon and a couple days of limping). I'd say a lot of people are probably thinking it helps because of reduced inhibitions, but if you're pretty comfortable, that might not be an issue.

Haha. When I drink, I tend to be hornier.. and then I fall asleep. Doesn't matter if it was 1 drink or 10, as soon as I start sobering up, I just want to sleep.

Drinking does make me fairly randy, but I think it also makes it harder (maybe impossible) to climax.. More experimentation needed!
