hello!
so, my periods are very light. they only last about two and a half days. the first day it is really heavy then the next day its very light and the the third day its hardly there at all.
my boyfriend and i decided to have sex on the second day of my period, where there was SOME blood, but it was not very gross.
for some stupid reason i thought it was impossible to get pregnant while on your period, so he came twice inside of me (the first time anyones ever done that to me).
i also took plan b the next day--but i am FREAKING OUT. when should i get a pregnancy test? also, i have an appt for birth control tomorrow.
gahh im freaking. thank you SO MUCH in advance.

Date: 2008-02-03 06:10 pm (UTC)1. You had unprotected sex on Day 2 of your cycle. That time is usually a less fertile time in your cycle, since it's not usually the time you would be ovulating. So it's not likely that you had ovulated and had an egg sitting there ready to be fertilized when you had sex.
2. Sperm can live from 1-5 days in your body, so you'd have to ovulate within that time for the sperm to have anything to fertilize.
3. You took Plan B the day after unprotected sex, well within the 72 hour window of Plan B effectiveness (which was exactly the right way to take it). Plan B prevents you from ovulating, so even if your body was getting ready to ovulate, Plan B should have stopped it. That means it's highly unlikely that you will ovulate within the time that the sperm are still alive.
1-3 all add up to "You're most likely not pregnant."
If you miss your next period, that's when I would take a test. When you go to your appointment to get birth control, you can ask the doctor how early you could test for pregnancy -- they should be able to give you more details.

Date: 2008-02-03 06:11 pm (UTC)Yes, it is possible to become pregnant from sex that happens during menstrual bleeding. But it is very, very unlikely that this would be possible on Cycle Day 2. Women do not ovulate during menstrual bleeding; the issue is whether or not sperm will survive until the next ovulation. On Cycle Day 2, this is very unlikely.
A recent study (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=11082086) found that only 2% of women were in their fertile window by Cycle Day 4; so reduce that even a bit less, and you were probably about 99% likely not to have been in a fertile window. It's not an absolute, and is best not relied on, but it's not bad either.
Now, consider that you took Plan B well within the time frame allotted. That means that even if you were going to have an ovulation at say, cycle day 8 or 9 (which is very early and fairly rare), then it would have been delayed, and sperm would not have survived long enough to cause a pregnancy.
In short: you had ejaculatory intercourse on the second day of your cycle, which is highly unlikely to be a fertile time. Then you used Plan B correctly and within the timeframe. The chances of pregnancy are extremely small.
That said, I know how much pregnancy tests can help peace of mind! A test is most likely to give accurate results starting at least 14 days after the sex in question.

Date: 2008-02-03 06:48 pm (UTC)All in all, there's a lot of scare tactics about having ejaculatory sex during menstruation. It's totally right that it isn't a "safe time," especially the further you get into a cycle, and relying on that for contraception isn't as effective as many other methods.
But some sites and advice, especially that directed at teens, tends to err too far on the side of caution and act like it's this MASSIVE RISK and is EQUALLY LIKELY TO GET YOU PREGNANT. It isn't, and I do not support those kinds of messages.
Good luck with your birth control, by the way! :) Make sure to check out our HBC Vulvapedia entry (linked on the sidebar of the VP main page) if you have any questions about it.
