Gardasil

I looked around in the Memories, but I couldn't find any posts concerning this. Forgive me for that if there are - I don't use Livejournal that much so I'm still learning my way around! Anyway....

I've been hearing a lot about this new shot, Gardasil, and how it's supposed to help guard women against some common types of cervical cancer. What are the side effects of it? How safe is it to get? Has anyone gotten it yet (or knows someone who has gotten it)? What's the best age to get it at? And any other information you can toss at me. :-)

I wanted to know because I have a doctor's appointment this Wednesday, and I'm curious to know if this is something I should be looking in to.

EDIT: I forgot to add in that I'm eighteen (turning nineteen in less than a month). I'm a virgin and I'm not planning on having sex of any kind anytime soon.

SECOND EDIT: Well, I read through most of the posts in the memories section. I feel a lot more informed about the vaccine and how to protect myself even once I've gotten it. If it is covered by my parents insurance, then I'm going to talk to my doctor about it this Wednesday. It's now something I'm seriously considering. The long-term effects are a bit concerning, but as one girl so rightly put it, there are few things worse than cervical cancer.

Thanks for all your help!

I haven't been very sexually active in my near 30 years. My first boyfriend gave me herpes at the age of 19 and even though we were done by age 22, it put a halt to my sex life. Until now that is. I have finally come to terms with my hsv status and have begun dating again. I am currently dating the most wonderful guy that I could have possibly imagined existed. I'd love to say that it will last forever, but being the cynic and realist that I am, it's not likely.

That all being said, I had my annual last week and asked to be tested for HPV so I could consider getting the vaccine even though insurance doesn't cover it. Hooorrray! I am negative! So now I am considering getting the vaccine and am trying to find information on why it is only recomended for women up to age 26. I know they only did studies on women up to age 26, but my question is why? The prevalence rates are highest from ages 20-24 and I know they are trying to catch the group that is statistically most at risk, but I can't find anything related as to what age has to do with the actual vaccine or the virus.

Does anyone have any information on WHY the studies didn't include women over 26? What affect, if any, does age have on the vaccine and/ or the virus? If anyone knows where I can find said information, please post a link.

Thanks~!

Hi ladies!

My doc recently informed me that she can help me enroll in some sort of sliding scale payment plan discount whatnot for the Gardasil vaccine.  Basically, my extreme lack of funds should no longer be an issue.

That said - is there any reason I should not get the vaccine?  I don't know very much about it, but I know it's still quite new, so I just want to make sure I'm well informed before I get it.  I have the doctor's office pamphlet telling me what it does and why it's good, but I just want to see if there are any differing opinions out there.

Thanks muchly!

Am I the only person afraid to get the Gardasil injection?
I'm not afraid of needles or anything like that but it scares me that it just came out. I keep thinking back to my abnormal psych. class when my teacher said, "When any medication comes out they force it onto as many people as will take it to gather further studies so it's best to wait awhile and see if any side effects come up later from it like paxil did."
And I keep thinking, "Okay, this stuff just came out...what if I wind up sterile or something?!"
I know I'm being overly paranoid but does ANYONE else feel this way?
I want to take the shot because I don't want HPV and I know it helps prevent some of the viruses...but then I'm hung up on it being new.
Hmm...

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I made an appt for my daughter to receive the HPV vaccine three days before her 16th birthday. She is very curious about it. I have what information that my doctor has supplied me and what I have received here. I searched the archives for HPV Vaccine but nothing came up. If someone can point me in the right direction I would be very appreciative.
