so how much does a cervical biopsy really hurt? i realize everyone has a different pain threshold, but i'd just like to know what to expect as far as the pain factor is concerned.

I'm not sure about a cervical biopsy... But I did have a biopsy done on my vagina within the past year. The doctor took a sample of skin to test a 'miscolored' area from the inside of my outer labia (if that makes sense). I'm not sure if it'll be the same for you, seeing as it's in a different area, but the procedure itself actually hurt - the needle with the numbing agent being the worst part. I cried on the table. After that, I was given a prescription was tylenol with codeine (didn't help much). The area was very sensitive for about a week. It felt like an open wound. It hurt to have sex - so after doing so once, I didn't have sex again until it was completely healed. Again, it may be different for you because it's in a different area - but a biopsy, in my opinion, isn't pleasant.

You'll be okay, though.

Note: Below average to average pain threshold over here!

It hurt no more than when my gyno does a more invasive pap with the little thing that looks like a bottle brush, for me. Pinch, dull cramping, done.

There are no nerve endings that go to the surface of the cervix, so perhaps your biopsies went much deeper than mine.

like a bitch.

i am not going to lie to you. i still can hear the horrible "snip" sound and i dare not think of the pain. i still consider it an unhealed trauma.

maybe you can go to a hypnotist or some type of relaxation teacher. lots of cancer patients have to deal with painful treatments, perhaps you can search online for someone who helps people with that. good luck.

i yelped. it would have been a scream, but i held it in. i had taken 2 ibuprofen before. i won't lie, i was in a lot of pain. and it was just a little biopsy from inside my cervix, she said she didn't take much. i took several more OTC pain relievers afterwards, but i was cramping a LOT for the first few hours and had a lot of duller pain for at least 6-8 afterwards. it was over a week before i felt anything like normal.

i'm very sensitive, though. the regular pap smear hurts and i usually cramp afterwards. so your mileage may definitely vary. i've heard some people say it wasn't bad at all.

*nod* well, she took a little bit from outside, some cells that she thought looked a little strange, but then said 'and i'm going to take this bit from inside your cervix, too, since i can't see inside there'. and then she did. not sure that mine was the same procedure as what you're going to have, exactly, though, so it may not be the same for you.

I have no advice in this area, so I wish you good luck instead!

And also.. your icon scares the s**t out of me. I read those books when I was little and I was petrified and couldn't move out of fear every time I did.

i still think about that one sometimes, when i have random bumps in my skin (which invariably turn out to be pimples or something like that).

*shudder*

I thought is was moderately painful. It definitely felt very very weird as well.

My advice is to remember to breath slowly and to try to remain as relaxed as possible and to speak up if anything hurts.

It hurt a lot, but it wasn't horrible. I've gotten an IUD and that hurt MUCH more. The biopsy wasn't too bad. Then again I've got a pretty good pain threshold, but I think you'll be fine... Just try to relax, cause if you don't, it could be worse.

Please don't expect pain; you will be taut and crampy and make things much worse! Relax, and make SURE you breathe deeply during the procedure. Mine didn't really hurt, it was uncomfortable, the snipping sound that someone else mentioned was the worst part for me and gives me the creeps. I had moderate cramping/bleeding/discharge for about a week after. I was not brave at all and bawled during the whole thing while the nurse held my hand. I recently went for a LEEP and was much more mature, haha. Trust me, take some advil, breathe slowly and deeply, and tell yourself you will be fine.

I literally just had one today. After being numbed, I didnt feel the actual biopsy. The needle pinch was uncomfortable but tolerable. I also had a biopsy of the vulva and that hurt quite a bit. I have stich's on my labia. Cervical biopsy was a piece of cake compared to the biopsy of the vulva. You'll be O.K.

Wow you got freezing for a biopsy? I didn't think they did that. I didn't get stitches when I had my vulva biopsied either, although I did get that frozen.

"Wow you got freezing for a biopsy?"

---My doctor tried to make me as comfortable as possible because the procedure was like torture for me. I was beaten and raped several years ago and anything having to do with that area brings severe anxiety.

I had no numbing from the doctor, and had taken no painkillers before the procedure and found it to be a bit surprising, like being hit in the stomach and losing your breath for a moment, and then fading. I was a bit wobbly for a few minutes after the biopsy, but got up and was driven home. (Mom had gone with me, deciding that I shouldn't drive myself to the event.) I ate some ice cream and wonton soup (comfort foods to me) had a nap and was fine later that day. Had I not been so tired from the anticipation and stress, I could have gone back to work right after the procedure, but opted to take the rest of the day off because I was so scared.

I admit, I have an oddly high pain tolerance, so you may want to dismiss my experience, but it really wasn't that bad-there are far worse things that I've felt.

I had nothing except ibuprofen, and I hardly felt my four biopsies (and the one taken from inside the canal!). I don't believe the cervix has many nerve endings.
