IUD

I've been on the pill for nearly 6 years. I do not like this. I HATE the idea of being on hormones for such a long time.

I am considering getting an IUD. I read the vulvapedia, and scanned some memories, but I'd really like to hear some personal experiences with the IUD.

Have you had them fall out? Is insertion painful? Have you gotten pregnant on it? Please share your opinions and experiences. thanks.

There's a bunch of IUD communities where all your questions can be answered. One that a ton of people have linked to is [livejournal.com profile] iud_divas

Good call--I was just going to recommend [livejournal.com profile] iud_divas as well!

I had a mirena.

I ended up needin a hysterectomy that was unrelated to the IUD. I did however, bleed the entire time it was in. 4 months.

I didn't find insertion or removal painful (I have one child). I didn't get pregnant on it (husband has a vastectomy tho). It didn't fall out or migrate.

Some IUDs have hormones too, some don't. My wife was using an IUD when she got pregnant - the OBGYN had to remove the IUD when they confirmed the pregnancy. Our son just turned 10.

I have the Flexi-T (copper), 1 year now. SO WORTH IT. I recommend it to every one of my friends! Spontaneous sex without having to think twice = the best.

My periods are actually less painful now than when I was on the pill, though they are a day longer, though that seems to be disappearing now that I've been on the IUD for awhile.

Insertion was a uncomfortable, but not necessarily painful. It was definitely worth it.

I totally second the recommendation to ask over at IUD Divas.

I have a copper T. I can't do the hormone thing, so it's been great.
My periods are heavier, and have more cramping, and last a couple days longer, but it's still worth it.
Insertion is quick, and is uncomfortable for a second, but not much more of a big deal than a pap smear.
I had one fall out several years ago, but I had had it inserted just after having my son, so my cervix was probably still open too far. I could feel that it wasn't right, and went to the doctor and got a new one.
I'm keeping mine until my boyfriend gets snipped. Nothing is perfect, but this is the best method for me.

are there any other side effects related to heavy longer periods, i.e. moodiness, headaches?

Not that I've noticed. I tend to have cramping throughout the period, but it's mild after the first couple days.
