Hey Ladies!

I'm not sexually active, but I take birth control (Yaz) to help clear up my skin and reduce cramps/period woes.

I sometimes forget to take it, and since i'm not worried about getting pregnant, i'll just take a regular dose the next day. Sometimes this works out to me taking a pill every other day.

Is this ok to do, hormonally? Or is my body going to be all like WTF!?!

I'm not sure on how exactly it would effect you, but by doing this you could experience some weird side effects with your hormones going up and down. Or, it could not. Hormones are funny things.

I was on Ortho-TriCyclin (full, not lo) when I was 13 just for acne. I was -- and still am -- bad at taking pills on a regular basis, so I missed them all the time. Although I was only on these pills for barely a year, I didn't have any weird hormonal side-effects at the time and, 8 years later, I have no long-term issues.

I bet it varies person to person, but for me it didn't do any damage.

I can't say whether it will cause issues hormonally, since each person is different. However, on Yaz, when you miss a pill, you are supposed to take the missed pill as soon as you remember, which could mean taking two pills in one day (your pill pamphlet can be found here in case you need it http://berlex.bayerhealthcare.com/html/products/pi/fhc/YAZ_PPI.pdf?WT.mc_id=www.berlex.com). Even though you aren't taking the pill as birth control, its efficacy in clearing up acne and reducing cramps might be reduced, since you aren't getting all of the active hormones. This might be a question you want to take to your doctor, and discuss whether or not you are receiving all of the benefits of Yaz for you when taking pills this way.

I can't remember what it's meant to do for skin, think it varies, but Mirena is meant to be very good for reducing period woes. Indeed, it almost always reduces bleeding and cramping, and often stops periods altogether. Since it's a form of IUD, it's effective no matter how bad your memory is. (I have a lousy memory too, I've got a copper IUD in.) Because the hormones are delivered locally, the dose is smaller and less likely to upset your system. It's also the most effective method of contraception in existence. [livejournal.com profile] iud_divas is the place to find out more.

if you can't remember to take it properly you should switch methods or stop using BC altogether. you could really fuck up a baby by dousing it with hormones every other day while it is still the size of the period at the end of this sentence. or maybe it would cause miscarriage, i don't know. either way it seems silly to have the hormonal detriment without the contraceptive benefit.
