I'm kind of concerned. 

Background: Recently stopped taking the pill (Yasmin). I was on it for about 2 years and I just had my period May 2nd when I stopped taking the pill mid-pack (I know! not a good idea). I've had sex several times since I've been off, only one time with a condom. Anyway, for about 2 days now, today being the second day.. I've been having thick white discharge. I've had yeast infections before and this isn't like that. It's thick but not cottage cheese. It doesn't itch or hurt, no pain what-so-ever. No redness. There's a slight smell to it, but nothing extremely foul and I usually can't even smell it. What could be causing this? Is it because I just got off of the pill? I'm not even close to start my period yet (May 30ish) so what could be causing this? I don't think I'm pregnant because when I had sex it was all before I was "due to ovulate" although I know I could possibly ovulate at anytime because I stopped the pill a week before my period was due and I actually missed quite a few during the month (I think out of the whole pack I missed two the first week, one the second week, and five the third week. I know how wrong that is but I began to dispise the pill because I recently figured out it's what absolutely killed my sex drive and was giving me extreme mood swings. Alright, I'm ranting now. What could cause this discharge?!

It could be an infection of some sort. Do you have a medical provider who can take a look and help you with a diagnosis and treatment?

Are you in need of contraceptive recommendations as well, or are you comfortable with your current plan?

I'm going to the doctor next week and I planned on telling her if it didn't clear up by then. Don't infections usually hurt or something though?

I'm comfortable using condoms now. I know they aren't as effective as other contraceptives but I don't want to go back on anything with hormones until I'm older and after I have children.

From what I've been reading on VP, there are a number of different ways that people can react to YIs and BV, so it might be some kind of variation of one of those.

It could be ovulation discharge.

If you've been having any sex with no other protection while your pill's been compromised, you should probably ask about a blood-test version of a pregnancy test when you go to the doctor. (Unless it's been long enough for a urine-test to work, of course.) Increased "milky" discharge is a sign of pregnancy (watch out for the annoying "subscribe to our magazine" popup on that link, or use this slightly different link instead.)

I'm afarid to ask my doctor for a blood pregnancy test because I'm only 19 and I think she'll lecture me about being off of the pill and the chances of me getting pregnant will increase blah blah. But then again, it's not "milky".. its almost like.. paste i guess. but theres no smell, nothing. its so weird. it's much less today (i posted early this morning)

I'll have to bring it up to my doctor when I see her next week. thank you!!

If your doctor lectures you... I dunno, perhaps a really big, "WELL, DUH, that's why I want the TEST!"? But I've gotten far more attitudinal since I had a kid. I count at telemarketers to get them to shut up so I can tell them to take me off their call list. (Works on the kid. Works on the telemarketers, too.)

I just realized... if it'd be about 2 weeks since you had sex with a compromised pill -- or, actually, if that is a pregnancy discharge -- a urine test should tell you without the possibility of a doctor being a smart-aleck.

Crossing fingers that it's just ovulation or some other normal fluctuation.

I actually have a home pregnancy test but I don't want to take it now and have it be negative, then me be late on my period and have to buy another one. so I think I'll try the whole blood test thing next week with the doctor and if she won't or if I chicken out, I'll wait to test when I'm closer to when I'm suppose to start my period.

and I LOVE the telemarketer counting thing. hahah. I'm definately going to try that next time. haha. Thanks again!!

My guess is that you're experiencing ovulation discharge. When you ovulate, your discharge can become clear or white and gel-like in thickness, sometimes a little stretchy. If you just quit the pill and bled on the 2nd, this would be about the right time for you to be ovulating. It's been at least two years since you ovulated, so no wonder you're concerned.

If you're experiencing any other symptoms (itching, burning, etc.) then I'd say to get it checked out, but as it is, I'm guessing it's just a natural body fluctuation that you haven't seen in a long time.

Thats what I thought it was originally.. ovulation discharge because I am due to ovulate but its not watery or stretchy. it's almost looks like paste, but it wipes off very easily and with no pain. Because I know last time I got a YI that same thing happened but when I would wipe it would be extremely painful and the itching would begin. I'll keep an eye on it. It seems to have reduced today as the day goes.

Progesterone
The hormone progesterone in birth control pills act on the uterus to both alter the lining to prevent implantation and forms a cervical mucus plug that mechanically blocks acceess of sperm. There is also an inhibition of sperm capacitation.

Your discharge can change when you go off of HBC - HBC changes your discharge to help prevent sperm from meeting egg.

If the discharge isn't cottage cheesey, you have no itching or pain, and there's just a slight smell, I wouldn't be concerned.

It is possible, however, that you are pregnant, even if you only had unprotected sex near your period. As soon as you stop taking the pill (or take it incorrectly/miss multiple pills) you can become pregnant.

I'm waiting until its closer to when my period is suppose to be due (but who knows since I messed up the pill so badly) and I plan on taking a HPT. I didn't think you could get pregnant so quickly after you stop the pill, because I had heard of people trying for a long time because the pill messed up their cycles and whatnot. good thing to know! haha. thank you!

It's a common misconception that it takes women a long time after stopping HBC to get pregnant - I know a girl who thought that, and she got pregnant within two weeks of stopping the pill. Of course, that doesn't mean you definitely *are* pregnant or anything - you might not have even started ovulating again. It is much harder to get pregnant when you are still taking the pill, even imperfectly, or when you're only having sex at the very beginning/end of your cycle, but it IS still very possible. I just didn't want you to get in the same position my friend did, and accidentally get pregnant!

I mean, I knew it was possible but I figured 'it just won't happen to me' mainly because i DO want a baby and my boyfriend doesn't want one right now but if i was pregnant we would work things out from there.

if I am pregnant, it won't be the end of the world for me but I guess I'll have to wait and see. Thanks again for the advice, I really appreciate it.

I am kind of in the same boat as you. I have discharge like that, but I am on birthcontrol and haven't missed a pill. I know I can even get pregnant while on the pill although it is a slight chance, but I am having the same sort of discharge and we have the same period dates.

I get thick white discharge sometimes. Is there a lot of it? I wouldn't be too worried about infections unless you have other symptoms.
