This is something I've been wondering about for a while. If your 'period' when you're on the pill isn't actually a real period, would you still miss it if you became pregnant? Or would you carry on bleeding for as long as you kept taking the pill while pregnant? If the latter, how are you supposed to detect pregnancy early on if you're still having 'periods'?

What I'm essentially asking is: do you miss your period if you get pregnant while on the pill?

Yes, because if you get pregnant, that means you ovulated (which isn't supposed to happen whilst taking the pill, but there is that itsy bitsy 1% chance) and the ova was fertilized, so you WOULD miss your period.

You would not continue to have a period if you were pregnant and taking HBC. Since pregnancy signals the body that it should not shed its uterine lining, that will not occur.

However, it's not uncommon to experience some spotting or bleeding during pregnancy (to no ill-effect). Since HBC can shorten and reduce the flow of many women's periods, I would imagine that if you were taking HBC it would be somewhat more likely to confuse pregnancy spotting with a normal period; however, that's still not a very major factor.

Ultimately, you would not have a full fledged period.

fyi, your period on the pill is a real period, just a scheduled one. just because you don't ovulate doesn't mean its not a period. but yes, you would still miss your period if you were pregnant on the pill, but someone women do still get their period (pill or no pill) when they first become pregnant. if you think you might be pregnant, take a home pregnancy test or see your doctor.

eh--- it's not exactly a "real" period. It's progesterone-withdrawal bleeding, not a true menstrual period. But if you're saying it's still shedding some uterine lining & thus it would have the same effect of aborting a pregnancy, I guess that's mainly accurate.
