Hi everyone, I have a quick question.

My friend may be pregnant, and from what she said we agreed that she needs to take a test. So my questions are...

1. What test is the most reliable?
2. She had sex 2 or 3 weeks ago, so is it too early to find out?

Thanks!

Pretty much all the over the counter pregnancy tests are the same, and really accurate. Even dollar store tests are really good.

She can take a test to determine if she's pregnant as soon as she misses the first day of her period. The hormones most likely won't be high enough to be detectable before then.

Yeah if she's a week late, she can pretty much take any over the counter pregnancy test and get an accurate result.

Pregnancy tests begin to be effective 14 days after intercourse or when your period is late. However, that's only when they start to be effective, and false negatives are common - if she has reason to be concerned but gets a negative result, she could see a doctor for a blood test.

She says above that her friend's period is like a week late, so she wouldn't need a blood test unless she takes over the counter preggo tests and they say negative, but she still doesn't have a period.

That's... what I thought I said, but I evidently wasn't clear enough.

That is, seriously, exactly what [livejournal.com profile] sweetrush said.

Pretty much all over the counter pregnancy tests are equally reliable, but some are able to pick up lower levels of hormones than others-that's why some advertise that they can give an accurate result before a missed period. Peeonastick.com has ratings for which ones are more sensitive than others.

At two or three week out, a pregnancy test should provide a reliable result. I would suggested getting two-have her take one now, and in a week or so, if no period has shown up, then take the other. If there's still no period, and there's still concern about pregnancy, then it may be time to consult a health care professional.

I hope it works out the way your friend would like.

I would suggest she get the digital kind. AT this point, I'm sure the last thing she needs is to be standing over a test trying to figure out whether there are two pink lines or one. Tell her to take one the first day of her missed period. If it comes back negative, wait a week and if there is still no period take another test. Use first pee of the day for the most accurate results. If her period is delayed more than a week or two and she is still getting negative tests I would probably see a doctor.

They are a little bit more expensive but a few months ago I got a two pack for less than the regualr kind at Wal-Mart.

Please check out this site; it's the most comprehensive pregnancy test site online:

Hope that helps!
