Implanon users - what have your experiences been like? Do doctors prefer to give it to you if you have used bc before? (I'm thinking the way they prefer giving the IUD to older women/women with children) Compared to other birth control you have used (if any), do you like the implant more or less - why?

Is it available in Canada? If so, how much does it cost? Was it easy or hard to find someone to implant it?

Though I don't have the answers to your first few questions, to my knowledge Implanon is not yet approved in Canada. It is available in Australia and in a number of EU countries; the United States approved it last summer and it is expected to be available in the States by 2007.

I may be wrong on that, but I'm pretty sure about it. However, if the US FDA approved Implanon that generally means that a Canadian approval will follow at some point; currently, a search for "Implanon" on Health Canada's site turns up no results.

i'm in the US and i'm 23 and I got an IUD, i know your question is referring to implanon but it seems to be that you are turning to it thinking you can't get an IUD, i have no kids and got my IUD at 22, many nulliparous young women get IUD's check out here and in iud_divas you can find out lots of great info on the IUD which is approved in both the US and canada

While Norplant and Implanon are not the same product, I thought I'd throw my Norplant experience in. Also, I'm in the US. I had not used any hormonal birth control, nor had I had children, when I got Norplant at age 18. I had no trouble finding a doctor in town who was trained and willing to implant it. I personally loved the implants, though I have only tried the patch since, and wasn't happy with it after two, so I can't really compare Norplant to other hormonal birth control.

I'm in Australia, so not a great deal of help to you, but I have several 18yo friends who have been on Implanon since age 15 or 16. There were no age issues. Two love it, one had such bad awful mood swings and physical discomfort that she had it removed - and her doctors had trouble finding it to take it out of her arm.
After being implanted it can make you bleed for quite a while, either for a last few periods or constantly for a month or so - and similarly when it's effectiveness is decreasing towards the end of the 3 year period. My dad's a general practitioner and I spoke to him about pros and cons a while ago and he seemed slightly discouraging, mainly because of the bleeding and also because of hormonal side effects like mood swings, weight gain and also said it's not the most reliable BC in the world. On the other hand, I have a Ob/Gyn friend who's used Implanon about 4 times now, in between her 3 pregnancies (after coming off it obviously) and continues to use it.

If you want it, you'll probably have to try and see whether or not it suits your body and your lifestyle. Good luck!

It's actually about as effective as BC gets. Has a lower incidence of pregnancy than, for example, sterilisation (at least for the first year of sterilisation). Perfect vs. typical use is no longer an issue (don't have to worry about taking your pills on time).

Last time I was on Implanon I had really annoying bleeding patterns but this time I bleed significantly less than I would do normally.
