So I have a diaphragm and have used it fine the first two times. This time it's stuck. It's been in for close to 12 hours now. I can feel the rubber middle, but can't get ahold of the ring. I've tried bearing down and haven't had any luck.
Any suggestions? I'm getting really nervous.

Date: 2006-09-13 12:52 am (UTC)I hope everything comes out ok. (Pun intended.) Also, you can visit any doctor or an emergency room, and they can easily help you out with this. It happens all the time, from what I hear, and is no big deal to those in the medical profession. :) Wishing you luck!

Date: 2006-09-13 05:20 am (UTC)Some women are sensitive to hormones and/or cannot tolerate the side effects that come with HBC. Also, depending on how much they pay per pack, a diaphragm may be less expensive in the long run, though couples using diaphragms are generally instructed to use spermicide with it, so they'd have to keep purchasing that.
As for advantages over condoms, again, diaphragms are reusable while condoms are not. Also, since the diaphragm is inserted inside the vagina, it lets the woman be a little more in "control" of the contraceptive method, if you will. Also, the diaphragm can be inserted up to 2 hours before sex, so it may pose less of an interruption to the act itself.
In addition, diaphragms can be used with other methods, so for some people, it isn't a case of diaphragm or condom/HBC/other contraceptive method but rather, diaphragm plus one of those other methods.
But I'm sure someone who's actually used the method can do a better job of telling you personal benefits she experiences with a diaphragm; these are just my guesses. :)

Date: 2006-09-14 11:34 pm (UTC)*raises hand* Sorry a day late, but I just thought I'd chime in, since my ilk seem to be rare. I use a diaphragm and condoms. I can't take any hormonal birth control containing estrogen because of family history of blood clots (directly tied to BC). I tried depo-provera and hated it, horrible mood swings and decreased libido. I tried having an IUD inserted, but I've never borne a child and my uterus is too small (this isn't always the case, it just was with me).
Once I was practiced with inserting the diaphragm, it was no trouble at all. In my former relationship, my SO hated the lack of spontaneity that stemmed from it. My current SO of three years doesn't mind it at all, however, and he's happy that I'm so happy with my method. My only drawback is my increased risk of UTIs. Long-run, I think it's worth it and I'd love if I could manage to never need hormonal BC.
