I've always though PMS was a little overblown, and I'm a litttle shy of saying some of the mood swings I get are because of it.. seems like a lot of it is a placebo effect. However I've noticed that maybe 3-4 days before it starts, I usually have one night where I wind up in tears; it always seems like an appropriate response to something 'bad' that happens at the time, but I'm beginning to think it's pretty much because of my mood. It seems fairly consistent. If nothing is wrong to be sad about, I'll get depressed about lifein general/how we're all gonna die in 70 years or less, haha.
Also, my cramps usually aren't bad at all, but I get BAD back-aches. CAN you get backaches with your period? I get them the first couple of days, I try to correct it, as if my posture is causing it, but I can't fix it, and I think I'm just stuck with it.

and also, I used to have really irregular periods at 5'4 and 120 pounds, went to college and after my first year I was like 130 by the middle. then my periods came like clockwork. 30 days 30 days 30 days 30 days. this summer, i've just started losing a bit safely, running a bit more.. down to 126 or so. and this last period took 40 days to come. the funny thing is, my doctor ( i go to a general pediatrician) says 120 is my normal weight and that 130 is on the heavy side for 5'4ers.. is the fact that my period comes irregularly unless i'm up at 130 a sign that that's my universe/god-given weight to be at?

Just my opinion, but I think your doc is crazy. Some of the charts they're phasing out now might have 130 as hefty, but goodness, that's NOT bad. 230 like me, worry. 130, sounds healthy.

Now, what might be happening with your period is exposure to other women. Were you in a dorm? Did everyone's period happen around the same time? That sometimes happens in communal environments, you synch up.

well actually it does depend on your body shape....if you have a naturally small structure, 130 may be too much. for others, it's very healthy!

You just described my PMS exactly. Yes, I get crazy mood swings, and yes, I get extremely bad back aches. I don't know why your back can hurt during PMS, but it does. Being on the pill definitely makes it better, if that's something you want to look into. Regular exercise also alleviates some of the symptoms of PMS. Otherwise, just take pleasure in the fact that you're normal :-)
Oh, and I think your doctor is nuts, too. I'm a mere two inches taller than you, and I don't think I could weigh 130 if I were just a pile of skin and muscle and organs. My body just isn't built for that. I find it hard to believe that two inches is that different, unless you're a very petite girl. In fact, at both 120 and 130, your BMI is smack dab in the middle of "normal weight". My guess is that since he's a pediatritian, he isn't really well versed in what a 'full-grown' woman should weigh? Oh well.
And, if you're at college, I highly reccomend seeing a general practitioner. My pediatrition wouldn't even see me after I turned 18! Now I have a very nice woman (she's a gyno, too) who I can actually talk to about womanly-problems.
Whew that was long. Good luck!!

not too sure about the period thing...maybe the change in getting active, maybe just a body hormonal change?
but the thing about your doctor i would NOT go by. i'm a tinsy bit over 5'4 and i go between 135-140 and my doctor says if i wanna lose weight fine, but i'm not in a health danger or anything, when i was heavier(150-160) they were all over me to lose weight.
130 is fine, esp. if you are working out.
i know a girl who is under 5'4 and weighs 140, but looks about 125 cause she's all muscle.

i usually know i'm going to get my period when i get incredibly emotional over nothing. last week my SO had to leave at the end of the night instead of staying over like he usually does, and i ended up crying. (even though i was going to see him again the next day) i had to laugh at myself. sure enough, i got my period the next night. i've also gotten lower back pains as well, and i think that's fairly common.

That's what I get for PMS! Although the majority of my PMS happens during my period not before. So yeah, I get awful backaches pretty much the entire time I'm bleeding and cramps too, YAY ugh. Also the day before my period, like clockwork I get upset about something and for the longest time I always thought it was just coincidental but having lived through it so many months I don't think it is. Plus I always feel fine the next day ;p

Weight for your height is totally dependent on your frame. For example, I'm 5'5" and 160 pounds. Sounds overweight compared to BMI charts, but my % body weight is actually right smack in the middle of the healthy range for my age and height. Muscle and bone structure can really throw off standard BMI measurements!

I have definitely had backaches with my periods before.

I wish PMS didn't exist...but I get it, too. It's very specific. Blah.
