Hi. I'm a nineteen year old virgin who's been dating my also virgin boyfriend for about eight months. We've given it a lot of thought and we've decided to have sex with each other. We're in a long distance relationship right now, and I'm going to see him this Saturday and...yeah, very excited and nervous!

So I've been reading up on how to make it easier for me when I finally have sex with him. I read somewhere that it's good to get some lube, and do some penetration with your own fingers.

So I did get some lube, at this place at my college where they sell condoms and other forms of birth control for only a couple cents, really. (8 condoms for a dollar! YEAH!) They're unlubricated Lifestyle brand condoms, and the lube I got is called "Wet Light." But when I put it on myself it started to sting. Not so badly at first, but then after a moment or two it really started to sting, and I had to hop into the shower to rinse it off. Obviously, it wasn't a very pleasant experience, and I'd hate for something like it happen when we are finally able to get it on.

Another reason why I don't like this stuff, was because when the smell of the lube mixed with my natural scent, it reeked. Odorless my ass!

Does anyone know why it stings? It's not because of spermicides, because "Wet Light" contains none. And can anyone give me a name of another lube I can purchase, preferably one that doesn't sting and one that doesn't make me smell? And where? I have no idea where to get lube outside of that place on my school campus, and "Wet Light" was the only kind they had to offer.

Thanks.

I know that many people are big fans of Astroglide (I've used it a few times, and it seemed to do the trick), and it's available in my area at most major grocery stores/drug stores (I got mine at Albertson's...hooray for the self-checkout lanes! Lack of embarassment!).

First off: Do you live anywhere near a Planned Parenthood? It sounds like you could use some advice and some decent equipment. I've had good experiences with them before, and they provide very affordable birth control (including free condoms!). Reproductive health is a serious jump to make, and even if you aren't considering hormonal birth control it might be a good idea to stop in. Worse comes to worse, you got some free condoms.

Secondly: It stung? What the hell? Was it supposed to have a "Warming Agent"? Some people have really unpleasant experiences with those. Anyway, you can actually find a wide variety of lubricants at a drug store or a supermarket (depending on where you live, though I've never had trouble). Buy something basic, like KY. Some lubes can give you a yeast infection, so be careful and read the labels. Also, don't be afraid to shop around (if you can afford it). Here's a guide to various lubricants that might be useful to you. (http://www.babeland.com/shoppingadvice/lubeadvice)Good luck!

Astroglide is the one I always come back to and I am very sensitive, but get the orginal form in the bottle not the tube. I have found the tube to be very thick. May I also suggest that you use lubricated condoms for your first time. Unlubricated are more prone to breakage for the obdvious reasons. I second the advice to stop by your local PP for some hands on advice on how to protect you and your partner properly.

I just loathe lube. I think my experience with any type of lube has been similar.

If you can't find a lube that will work for you, you don't necessarly *need* it. Just make sure lots of foreplay is involved so that your properly naturally lubricated before your first time. I realize not all women can produce a large amount of natural lubrication, so if that's you, good luck finding something that will work.

Friendly Mod Request

Is that water-based? Appearantly I can't use KY or Astroglide, which are both water based & it seems that they both cause a similar insta-sting.

I did a little experiment one day using astroglide, ky and plain water... plain water didn't cause sting but the ky and astroglide did.

See if you can get ahold of something silicone based. The label might not say "Silicone based" on it; for example I'm trying out Pjur (comes in a small black tube), which is expensive but does not cause sting.

well, I've never used lube before ... (yeah I know... wtf! I think I get very wet naturally!)

But as for the sting? Doubt it's supposed to do that. I've heard awesome stuff about KY and Astroglide, if you want to give them a shot. I know KY is available in Canada(if you live here) and the US but I am not sure about Astrolglide.

a company called emerita (women owned, all natural) makes a lovely natural lube. it's paraben free, mineral oil free, and petroleum distillate free, but it is water based, and it does have glycerin in it. it's completely latex friendly, and it feels really lovely. depending on what you're sensitive to, i'd say you should check it out. most natural foods stores sell it (whole foods, your local co-op), and you can also get it online at emerita.com.
i don't use lube when i'm not using toys, because i'm pretty much good to go on my own, but i know many who swear by it.
good luck, also, with the first time! congrats.

sliquid h20. i bought it on drugstore.com. it's a little pricey (around $10 or so), but it's so mild and non-gloopy. i love it. second favorite is astroglide.
i am not sure what in the wet light you are reacting to, but if it's to glycerin, look for glycerin-free lubes like sliquid. :)
