I've got a question about being sick for the first day of my period.

I've been experiencing worse and worse symptoms of menstruating over the past year and a half or so, and they've been getting progessively worse to the point I'm practically crippled the first day of my period.

Anyway, I usually feel really cramped up, as well as nauseaus, severely light headed and get really bad chills to the point I'm shivering. I'm lightheaded to the point I can't stand up for very long, can't focus well, and so even if I wanted to go to school or whatever, I couldn't because I'd probably faint. (meaning I basically have to stay home sick from school) :\ I know it's from my period, because it happens for the first day of EVERY period I've had for quite awhile, and is gone by the time the second day rolls around. The symptoms are the same as well. Somedays are worse than others, obviously... but it is indeed getting worse overall.

I'm seriously considering going to the doctor about this. But does anyone know what kind of "fix" there is for something like this? Thanks!

I used to have to go home/stay at home for my cramps too. It would hurt down to the bones in my knees and hurt to the point where I'd cry and even throw up...which is saying something considering I never vomit. My mother used to faint from her's and also has endometriosis. However, I went to the doctor's and they put me on birth control, which fixed it completely. I don't think I have endometriosis because the gyno and doctors never mentioned it, plus everything's fine now. Go to your doctor and try to get birth control...also ask them about endometriosis as a precaution...these kind of things also run in families so talk to the female relatives if possible!

What she said :D

Now I only get mild pain on the first day of my period and its very easily managed with painkillers. Its also amazing knowing exactly where I am with my period.

Yep, I'd get nausea and even hallucinations the first day I bled for years until I went on the pill. Now I don't even get cramps.. nothing.

Just a thought, you very well might have endo. Its pretty common to start on birth control pills and if that is all you need that is great. But I wanted to suggest to you that you should ask your doctor what might be causing the problems because most women do not stay on bcps forever.

I used to be HOSPITALIZED for period symptoms. I'd turn blue from pain, get sick to my stomach, pass out...the only thing that helped was going on the pill. I know it's not for everyone (and I had to try a few kinds before settling on the best choice for me), but in my experience it helped.

My friend had these exact symptoms and she went to the doctor and found out she had ovarian cysts and that she was unable to have children. I know you are asking for a 'fix,' but I think you should go to the doctor because they would give you the right 'fix' and find out what is causing this. Hopefully it's not as bad as what my friend had.

I have similar symptoms (nausea, extreme pain, chills, falling into a semi-conscious state).

One thing that helps me prevent them is taking extra-strength tylenol, or something prescribed like Naproxen, before the cramps start, or just as they're beginning. Taking medication early doesn't prevent cramps completely, but it does keep them from getting extremely bad.

You may wish to read Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition by Marilyn Shannon as well. It is published by the Couple to Couple League, and so has references to Catholic practice, but the nutritional information is great and I havent seen it anywhere else. I have friends who have been greatly helped.

Naproxen may not work for the OP, it depends on the person. It never worked for me. Also, Naproxen in any amount (even Aleve) should only be taken twice a day at most, ideally 12 hours apart. More than 440 milligrams daily is considered an overdose and can do some serious damage to the body.
