I believe (the YI experts can correct me if I'm wrong as I've only had a YI once) that a YI can last for quite a long time if it's left untreated.
It also didn't look red or inflamed to me, but it was kind of sore because yeast dries your skin out.
You might also want to try some of the herbal remedies that are listed in the YI-FAQ on the vagpag site. I didn't try them, but I know other people have used them with good results.
The gyno is not that scary at all. I was only 16 when I went the first time (random out of cycle bleeding problem), and it wasn't bad at all. I think that it is highly recommended that you go see one once you either become sexually active or turn 18, whichever comes first.
I'm not positive about this, but I think that you can get them through Planned Parenthood. (Anyone else know?) I just found one through my regular doctor. In fact, some internal medicine doctors/general practicioners, including mine, will do a general gyno exam for you and could easily do a yeast test instead of sending you to a gyno.
