I second emmycantbemeeko's suggestions (heat, yoga, and pain relievers). I also find that it's helpful to take flaxseed supplements and to scrupulously avoid caffeine just before and during the first few days of my period.
Also, I find that if I take an ibuprofen at the very, very first cramp-like twinge, I often can avoid having them entirely.
As other posters have said, if the cramps get really bad and are happening every month, going to the doctor would be a good idea. Even if there is nothing wrong (I have horrible cramps sometimes, but not endometriosis or cysts or anything -- just bad luck), a doctor can give you more options for pain management.
